Well, this is my first "really good" DVD player. I understand it has 4X Upsampling, and I dont know what this means, exactly. I know its supposed to yield a better picture, etc.. From what Ive seen thus far, the video quality is extreamly good, on DVD and Divx files both.

I am running this by composite to an 2 year old Philips 25" analog.

    Thanks for any follow up...

From what I can tell by what I am reading, the upsampling is only going to work for an HDTV monitor, to take D1 to HD. With compositite output, I doubt that upsampling does anything at all.

Oddly, the video quality of this DVD player is still much better than my older Pioneer.

  3. Hi-

The DVP 642 doesn't upsample anything. It can only output 480i or 480p. Any upsampling required will be done by the HDTV. Using composite cables you'll only output 480i.

Exactly. I have found from research, to the best of my knowledge, resampling isnt even going to do squat for me unless I upgrade to an expensive LCD TV.

And once you get that expensive HDTV, and can finally use the DVP-642's progressive scan, you might change your mind about it being a good DVD player:

Capt.Video - you're confusing 4x upsampling with UPSCALING. They are NOT the same. You are thinking of upscaling the picture to fit high def formats such as 720p or 1080i and this player can't do that. If you upgrade to an "expensive LCD TV" you will have wasted your money because this player is still going to output a standard 480p or 480i signal regardless of the TV you send it to.

I have a DVP-642 and it's fine for my needs. Many complain about it. Unfortunately, Philips had serious quality control issues with this model and some of the ones they sold had problems immediately or very soon after purchase. I've also read complaints about the image if fed to a high def TV, but since I don't have a high def TV, I can't offer any personal insight into that.
