I have a Philips DVD player model 642/37 manufactured Feb/2007. It's connected to a Sharp LCD HDTV 47". When playing a for-sure good DVD disk, not pirated material, the movie color tones are all in various shades of blue. The whole spectrum of dark blues to light blues, but no reds, oranges, yellows, etc. Mostly blue.

This 'blue' phenomenon has occurred only recently when I made my first connections of the Philips DVD to the Sharp LCD. I checked and re-checked the connections, compared them to the Philips manual and the Sharp manual, and it looks right. I'm using component cables that came with the DVD player.

The other variable - and I don't see why it would matter - is that I recently changed service providers from Comcast cable to Direc Tv. The same Philips DVD functioned normally with all the expected colors when Comcast was the basic provider. After switching to satelite, things are all blue. But cable or satelite shouldn't affect DVD, right?

Can anyone take an educated guess or two of the cause? Regardless of how many times I checked to make sure I connected everything to the proper plug-in slots, do you think this is still where the problem is?

    Thanks in advance !

My first guess is that one of your 3 component cables is defective. But not the blue one. Or they could be switched around to the wrong sockets. Try switching the green and red.

If you have some RCA audio cables around, you could substitute them temporarily for a test.

    And welcome to our forums.

I FOUND MY OWN ANSWER, with a little more study of the manuals, so please cancel my question

In case anyone else experiences the same, or even similar problem, I will give a quick synopsis of the remedy:

The Philips manual tells the owner to make sure the DVD player 'color system' must be compatible with the TV and also the Disc. More specifically it references the settings for PAL, NTSC and Multi. The player and the TV must be set to the same setting. I discovered that my player was not in sync with the TV.

One needs to turn on the TV and DVD player, use the DVD player remote to bring up the setting screen. Go to the settings for color, and then click on the menu item that matches the TV, which in my case is NTSC. Once that was done, the picture color miraculously converted to normal and nice.

Bottom line: The answer was in the manual all the time, disguised by techno mumbo jumbo and abbreviations, but at least it was there. It's a sad world when we have to resort to 'reading directions', instead of flying by the seat of one's pants, as in years of yore.

Yes, Philips puts this player in "Multi" by default. The reason is that most US consumers NEVER play a PAL DVD, so "Multi" works because it plays what it gets - NTSC DVD produces NTSC output, PAL DVD produces PAL output. Of course, this will complete screw you if you try to play a PAL DVD on an NTSC TV as the TV will play it in black and white and the picture will scroll wildly as it can't handle the PAL output. In PAL land, most TVs sold are actually multi-standard, so the "Multi" setting usually works perfectly well there. As a result of this, I generally recommend that people set this player to NTSC and not Multi in the USA unless they are absolutely certain that their TV is a multi-standard TV.

Thanks for updating your post. We can't really cancel it, but your follow-up may be useful to someone else in the future. Welcome to the forums too.
