  1. Hello,

I recently replaced an aging power pack in my equally aged athlon 1.2ghz thunderbird with a new 550w; abit kt7a raid motherboard. While I was there I decided to add 256 of RAM, whcih I had taken from an old machine long ago. Then I booted back up. It was then I noticed, no picture, and no beep. I know this usually means the thing is dead. But I just thought I'd bounce the problem of a few others, before I forked out some cash on some new parts.
I have tried removing the RAM I put in and even tried removing all the RAM. I reset the bios via the jumper, which also didn't work. Can anyone else think of anything to try?
    thanks

This happened to my athlon 1800+ about 6 weeks ago. Same symptoms, although mine followed a lock up while working. Result - 1 dead CPU. Solution, new CPU, MB and memory.

No beeps, No BIOS screen. I would guess bad motherboard. Your CPU, memory, drives, and the rest may be alright. It could also be a failed power supply. A PS failure could take out them all.

Unfortunately there's no easy way to test all this.

You can try the old components in a new MB. I would also try a different power supply just in case it has a problem.

  5. I'd recently put a new HDD in and it just went over the power of the original PSU, so I bought a new PSU and that's when this happened. The PSU and the computer power on just fine.

So your CPU Fan runs as do any expansion card fans and case fans, just no POST?

Do you have an extra piece of SDRAM lying around? You may want to check the memory. Another thing to check or replace is the motherboard battery.

If your getting power to motherboard components I'd highly doubt the board is dead.

  7. This is what I was thinking, due to the power to the motherboard. But no I don't think I do have any sdram to check if it is the RAM. The only one I had was the one I did have lying around, and figured I should put in there, which seemed to 'cause this whole problem.heh

I had a situation where the power supply shorted and killed the mobo but all the other components were ok. As suggested by redwudz it could be a failed power supply that has affected the mobo. It may be time for you to take the mobo down to a pc shop to get it tested before you decide on buying new components. That way you won't be wasting money on buying new components and having them short out as well. Good luck.

I'm going to suspect the RAM then and/or possibly the chip. If the motherboard is sending power to other devices it's probably still good. A great indication of a dead board is when the power switch is turned on nothing powers up or only the power supply begins to whir to life. If the CPU and/or peripheral fans power up the motherboard is supplying juice to them. Bad RAM will prevent a POST as will a dead proc, but a bad motherboard won't distribute power.

i have had this happen before when i was messing around in my case and failed to plug the cpu fan into it's designated power connector on the motherboard. From what you described doing, it doesn't seem like you would have touched this connection, but just in case you did, there is a protection on alot of new motherboards that will not allow the pc to boot if the cpu fan is not plugged in to that particular "cpu fan" power connector on the motherboard.
