Hello!
I have a VHS tape that's not that old but has some
notable noise and dullness. I am not interested
(yet anyway) of putting this on DVD.
Instead, I was wondering if it was possible to clean
up the video by running it through a device of some
sort (between the VCR and the TV)?
I don't know if such a thing exists, but if it does, what
would it be called? What would be some good models?
Thanks!!!

You can start with a good VCR...... That can make a world of difference. See the restoration forum for more info.

you've come to the right place my boy! you've come to the right place!
members like lordsmurf and others have lots of knowledge on hardware correction and i wont even try to rehash what i've heard from them, best let it come straight from the horses mouth. -
What greymalkin said. lordsmurf's site is: http://digitalfaq.com/.
There's also a 'Restoration' forum here to look for some ideas. <<<< -
You can try to adjust your TV to play the tape (brightness, contrast, color saturation and hue).
Or you can use a "processing amplifier" that makes similar changes to the video signal without misadjusting the TV.
Other devices called "enhancers" attempt to boost preceived detail using a variety of eye tricks like edge enhancement.
See the restoration forum if you want to actually fix the video and record the result.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
