What filters (for VirtualDubMod) or other tools do folks recommend for cleaning up so-so quality video from an SLP VHS recording? Here's a sample of what I have. I noticed that a number of my recordings have a bit of a color saturation problem, which I suppose I could turn down at capture, but I think it introduces other problems.

Other examples I have have these lines across the screen that "oscillate", for lack of a better term.

VirtualDub has an internal HSV Adjust filter that can "improve" the chroma situation, but I would not expect miracles. I would also use the Levels filter. With the ghosting, I am not sure if the MSU Smart Sharpen filter will help or hurt.
Check out this web page: http://www.thedeemon.com/VirtualDubFilters/detailed.html#48

You will likely need to experiment with short clips to see what you can do. Some cropping may help to cut off the head switching artifact at the bottom of the screen, but take an equal percentage from the sides that you do from the bottom. (After cropping, you'll need apply Resize to get it back to the original aspect ratio.) It appears you have a multi-generational copy.

Good luck, but keep your expectations realistic.

BTW, what is this video? Beetlejuice Meets the Joker?

Thanks for the advice. No, I'm not expecting miracles. Yes, it's no doubt a multi-generational tape. The video is from the San Diego Comic Con masquerade back in 1989. Yes, I believe it is Beetlejuice meets the Joker.

I'm an archivist for an organization who is working to preserve the video from Science Fiction masqs from all over the US and elsewhere. Some tapes are in pretty good shape. Others are almost unrecoverable - especially ones recorded at SLP.

Are you using a good player VCR? If so, which brand/model?
