  1. How come DVD Movie Factory 2 and 3 won't read AC-3 audio? Why is it a frickin headache to take a movie recorded from a dvd recorder, put it on your pc, and edit it? Is there some sort of licensing issues involved here?

I attempted to edit the dvd. I used Movie Factory 3. I kept getting the message, something like "AC-3 audio cannot be read by DVD Movie Factory 3. A compatible format will be used." Ok. If a compatible format will be used, then why won't the finished product have audio??

Someone suggested i use software that will convert ac-3 audio to wav or mp3. HOW do i extract it from the dvd's VOB files, and how to i install the converted audio BACK into the VOB files?

MF2SE without any upgrades will work with AC3 Audio in "edit disc" mode(editing an RW disc) as long as you do not apply any upgrades to it. That cool little loophole was closed via later upgrades.
It is known as AC3 Passthrough. I used to use it quite often and was the sole purpose for purchasing MF2....though it was only $5 on Ebay...it was a wise investment until I got better at computer video "stuff".

AC-3 decoders and encoders both require a license royalty payment (as do MPeg2 encoders and decoders). Until recently, ULead Video Studio and Movie Factory had the double asterisk next to AC-3 support (" ** requires optional plugin" which lists $29).

The double asterisk disappeared in the latest rewrite of their web pages. Maybe the AC-3 plugin is now being included. It is certainly needed for DVD recorder and DVD camcorder import.

DMF 4 supports AC3, and you can often find it for $50 or less. Download the trial version to see if you like it.

I asked and was told ULead Video Studio 9 has AC-3 built in. The plugin was required for VS8.

Those are old versions, check out the version 4 upgrade. It looks like the latest upgrades for Movie Factory include AC-3 support.

    Author as normal .
Dont burn the project yet , output too folder.
    look at your files .
Locate the title vobs (1 gig , recursive numbers)

Run vobedit , open first vob of title , look for audio streams , you will need too know which one is which in order to demux the stream you want .

Choose demux , your chosen audio stream , demux complete title set , choose a folder for output , and go .

When done you can open this audio file in besweet and convert to ac3 .

Back in vobedit , demux the complete title set , mpeg stream , and go .

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Run muxman , load video stream , and the new ac3 stream , choose folder output location , and go .

Place these new vob files into project folder that holds the dvd that was produced earlier .

Just make sure these vobs have the required id numbers , so they match what is being replaced , ie , vts_01_1 , replaced by vts_01_1 .

Run pcgedit , open this dvd project , if error , allow it to correct these , if no error , choose save dvd .

Play test before burn (you may need ac3_filters installed ) .

It becomes a real mess if chapters and menu buttons are extensive ... alot more work involved .

    Save yourself time .

    Dvdauthorgui - basic dvdauthoring
Besweet - convert audio to ac3
    The gimp - menu creations
    Vobedit - ripping vobs apart
    Subtitleworkshop - what it is
    Vidchanger - very handy
    Vobblanker - same
Pcgedit - its not that hard , looksee at my guides
    Imagetools - burn dvd

Blender , wax2 , avisynth for fancy menu stuff .

Muxman - has audio sync ability

Basically covers almost everything you need for free .
