I am trying to produce DVD's from Sky+ recordings of TV programmes via an attached DVD writer. I then want to use the disc produced by the latter to edit and burn on my PC. My DVD writer produces a disc containing a DVD-RTAV folder. I am currently trying to edit and burn using Pinnacle Studio 9 SE, but this software apparently will let me import from a video camera, but not the DVD player on my PC. I am very new to making my own DVD's and am not really familiar with the techniques, terminology, and which software I should be using. Needless to say, I want to do this in the simplest way possible with extremely user-friendly tools! I have previously tried using 'MPEG-VCR' (impossible to use because of its hostile interface), TMPEGEnc DVD Author (only marginally more friendly) and Windows Movie Maker (will only accept AVI files, apparently), all with minimal success!

Can anyone lead me gently by the hand?

tmpgenc dvd author should accept dvd-rtav, select add dvd video and the select the dvd-rtav folder. you can also ulead dvd moviefactory, ulead dvd workshop and import from dvd-rtav.

if you want to edit in pinnacle you must convert to avi, you can try use virtualdubmpeg2 or virtualdubmod and open the vob/vro files in the dvd-rtav folder and convert to dv avi/uncompressed/huffyuv avi.

I am still having problems in understanding the basic concepts of what has to be done. I am starting with a single DVD-RTAV folder produced by my DVD writer. I want to divide this into segments, discard some of it (eg advertisements) and perhaps change their order, and then burn a DVD. I quite simply do not understand the TMPEGEnc DVD Author help files. I can produce a number of 'clips' in the Edit Clip screen, but cannot transfer these to the main Source Setup screen. How is this done? To achieve what I am after, do I use TMPEGEnc DVD Author alone, or do I need some additional software? Alternatively what do you recommend as the easiest software or combination of software that would be appropriate for someone with as little knowledge (and aptitude?) on this subject as me?

Would you try rebuilding your car engine without learning something about it first? Try reading some of the guides and tutorials for capturing, editing, and authoring dvd's. Knowledge is a wonderful thing.
