    Hi, I', attempting to convert a mpg2 file to divx or xvid avi. I used the default options for the mencoder divix preset, and checked the 5 sec test clip box. I get a 0 kb file. If I usethe ffmpeg xvid or divix preset I get a file w/ no audio. source file plays fine on windows (i donot have a mpeg2 codec for quicktime).

    My system is mac mini (intel) core duo, 1 gb ram. FFMPEGX version is 0.0.9w, using the intel binaries for the requisite apps downloaded from the main ffmpegx site.

    Any ponters to get the mencoder or ffmpeg presets to work would be greatly appreciated.

    here is the output info from the mencoder divix log:

    I had similar results, you might want to *read this*. At this point your easiest fix would probably be to encode the audio then mux the video and audio in D-Vision.

    Before you start you might want to change the name of your mencoder Video only AVI that you've already made. ffmpegX might use the default name for the audio file you're going to make and overwrite your existing video only file in the process.

    It looks like you want mp3 audio. Load your source movie into ffmpegX then choose the 'Movie audio to mp3' preset. Set the Audio Hz to match the source, adjust the bitrate, then encode. You might have to add the .mp3 extension to the output file. Then go to D-Vision and use the Add audio track tool to mux the files.

    Note: Setting the Audio Hz is important, you want to avoid this line from your first encode;
    Building audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/s16le -> 48000Hz/2ch/s16le...

    Also; Kill the spaces between the LaCie and 1, BATTLESTAR and GALACTICA, Season and 02/01.mpg, you shouldn't have any spaces in the file names;

    Thanks for the pointers. However I'd argue my easiest course of action would be to boot my PC and use it to convert the file =) I just wanted to see if this was a bug in ffmpegX or if I was incorrectly setting things up.

    One thing I find odd though is that i get the video only when using ffmpeg as the encoder, and i get nothing with mencoder--this sounds like the exact oposite of what you were seeing.

    Yeah, I'm not use to mencoder but I decided to try it cause other people in that thread were using it. I also decided to try a Commercial VOB for source to avoid what some people might call suspect AVIs. Even though the AVIs work fine in everything.

    With the ffmpeg encoder it sees the Audio Track 0 as DTS and track 1 as 5.1 AC3. I used Audio track 1 in XviD ffmpeg. For some reason I can't get mencoder to see an any Audio track. I even used MPEG Streamclip to convert the VOB to MPEG+AC3 but I still can't get mencoder to see the AC3 track that everything else sees fine. I dunno...

    This is from mencoder using the Streamclip Mpeg/AC3 source.

    Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
    For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.

    Hey, I got one to work!

    I used the same Streamclip MPEG for source, chose XviD ffmpeg, did the auto crop as the only change from the preset. That means it encoded the audio as MP3, 128kbs, 48000 (same as the AC3), stereo, CBR. In the other thread I was using Audio Passthrough to save the 5.1 AC3. Maybe We're onto something?

    Edit: Yep, if I encode the exact same file and use Audio Passthrough I get a 2 Day Audio track. Which of course doesn't work....
