I couldn't wait anymore so gave in and bought a 3 pack DL media.
FutureShop price matched their sister stores Best Buy who had them on sale for $9.99 canadian.
The media is Memorex DVD+R and the id is Ritek D01
I just wanted to keep things simple for my first DL burn with my LG4163B. I've written quite a few DVD5 with the burner but no DL so didn't know if I would have problems with the brand etc.....
I used dvdDecrypter in file mode and ripped the whole disc to my hdd. I also copied a dvdrom directory from the disc using the window explorer. These files are not copied by dvdDecrypter but I wanted the disc to be as close to the original as possible.
I then used Nero 6.6.xx to burn it as a video dvd. I also set the booktype to dvd-rom. The default speed was 2.4x the max for my drive with DL media and it took about 40 minutes.
Worked great. I checked the disc for layer switching problems and I didn't see any. It plays very well on my Philips dvp-642 standalone and on my 2 pc dvd burners. The second one is a NEC-1300.
I was a bit concerned about whether it would play ok on my Philips but it was great. the player loaded it really fast. I still have to test it on my 2 different older Apex players tomorrow. I hope that they work out too.
Next time I will try to author my own disc either from VHS source material or a DV transfer. I will have to learn about setting my own layer break before I do that.
For my backup, it seems that DVDDecrypter transferred the layer break point marker from the original DVD as it decrypted the files.
Now if only the price would drop some more it would be great.

Wonder if the quality has gotten any better overall. -
Hey, good job on the burn...
too bad I can't afford to burn DL disks
I bought a DL burner a few weeks ago just for the purpose of burning DL DVDs. When I when to buy the media, however, I wasn't quite happy with the price....I still have a 4xDVDDL writer now, but I never use it. -
+dl media is about $2/disc. If you look around you can find good deals on verbatim +dl. Bought myself (3)3packs $15 (1.67each) at staples.

@Omega33
Thanks. Even though it was a simple process for my first time I am really happy with the result
I bought my second burner for DL too but also because it is 16x and my NEC is only 4x.
I kept putting off buying media because of price but I got tired of waiting. I won't buy lots at that price but I wanted to try it. Funny thing is that a bulk 15 pack of some generic named DL was priced at $70 which would mean about $4.67 per disc plus taxes. (Go figure)
At almost $4 per disc including tax it's a bit scary while it burns but nice to have a full backup with no compression. It won't break the bank or anything but I hate to waste good money because of a stupid mistake.
Incompatibility is also always on your mind when you buy new media. I guess I've just been lucky over the last few years. My burners seem to accept most everything I buy.
I tried it in my old Apex players ad700 and 600 and it works fine there too. That's great news too.
@Denvers Dawgs
This will be good new for Omega33
I tried Staples Canada in my area but they didn't have any discs at the time. Prices here are kept higher than what is justifiable by the currency difference. It also took a lot longer to find DVD5 media at reasonable price. US prices were lower much more quickly but now that's not a problem bulk spindles are available everywhere at good prices.
@Faustus
Somehow my drives (burners and standalone players) have always worked well with all types of Memorex + DVD media. Early on Memorex DVD -RW didn't work in packet mode so I returned the discs and stayed with the +.
