Apparently they're out now so I'm beginning to research my next video workstations which will be based around a pair of these. I think I'll wait a while and let a generation/revision of them go by just to hear what sort of reviews they get. Undecided on a board in the system too, probably a Tyan or Iwill again. I've got the storage hardware ready in my old Tyan, all U320 15k and 10k drives. I've heard differing stories on the power requirements of such a machine, perhaps having to use redundant supplies to get it enough power. I'm loathe to spend a ton of cash on the 1kW PC Power and Cooling monster ATX supply since redundant would probably be a better choice for the money. I do need to trade in my Quadro FX 1100 to something with PCI-E since both the Opteron rig and my new Nocona rig will both be PCI-E. I even saw a 1x PCI-E tuner card out there so perhaps the Nocona machine will become the new HTPC.
The current primary workstation is still a great machine but after almost two years it's time to nuts on a new system again. Maybe instead of the Quadro I should save some cash and look at getting the 512MB VRAM 7800GTX?

FB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming

Nice. Let us know if you get one put together. I've always been interested in the real world performance of the opterons. A dual, dual core machine sounds like it would be damned fast. How would programs recognize the chips, though?

That's what I'm curious about as well. I mean with HT enabled on my current rig an SMP-aware application will see 4 processors, but that's because two are "logical"processors. I don't think Windows treats the dual-cores quite the same and last I saw XP Pro only supported two physical processors. But then there still are only two sockets on the board.
As long as the OS can see all the "cores" on such a machine the applications therein will be able to use them. As usual only an SMP-aware application would be able to use more than a single "core". I'm hoping it's like having a quad-CPU workstation for Windows.
But can you imagine what a 64-bit native, SMP-aware software encoder could do with "4" such processors?
I won't be doing any purchasing/building until next summer at the earliest. The next several months are usually my slowest months for my video biz. I've also had to further decrease productivity there as I've been putting in more time at my day job in since there is a fantastic opportunity for a new position there in the next few months (a career job at last). In fact if you'll recall the only reason I jumped to buying CPUs for the current machine was because my old Tyan burned its ATX connector and I had to replace it fast. Now that I've got two good video workstations and haven't even heard of problems with the DH800 I think I'll be OK for a while.FB-DIMM are the real cause of global warming
