VHS > Dazzle II > MPEG2 > SVCD motion problem

I have a number of concert videos on VHS I've
been digitizng to mpeg2, then using TMPgenc to
convert to VCD and SVCD.
The VCDs look great, way better than Dazzle II > VCD
directly. On the other hand, motion is really annoying
on the SVCDs, ecspecially when the camera is moving around.
It's like I'm getting these horizontal lines.

I tried MiniDV > firewire > AVI > TMPgenc > SVCD, with
the same TMPgenc settings, and the results were PERFECT.

Meaning, Dazzle II DVC has to do something with the files,
and I'm hoping I can solve this with help from you guys.
It could be the mpeg2 codec the Dazzle II software
installes. Difficult to say.
Some guy mentioned I could try the "field ordering" setting
in TMPgenc.

The mpeg2 itself looks good when I play it on my computer.

Any feedback or help would be VERY much appreciated.

OK, I'm just going to guess at this one, so if I'm wrong don't shoot me

According to the Dazzle website, your capture card hardware can't capture at the same resolution as SVCD, so you have to do a resize of some sort (either up or down). It might be the resizing of MPEG2 to MPEG2-SVCD that's causing the wierdness - there may be nothing wrong with the file itself, it's just that your MPEG2 codec isn't happy with the new resolution. I've had the same kind of trouble before, using the ligos codec- solved it by using an ASUS DVD codec (came with my card).

You could test the SVCDs on another machine, or with a different MPEG2 codec.

It's worth a try....

Try changing your field order (Setting|Advanced) when you encode with TMPGEnc. Dazzle II does field A first, TMPGEnc defaults to Field B first.

Post yout TMPG settings. I am interetsed because I have same vertical lines problem upon camera motion and can't seem to get rid of them. I do DV cam-fire wire-avi-svcd. All looks perfect expect those vertical lines. If I rip a DVD and encode with same settings no lines exist?

Yeah, I will do so once I get back home. Way the **** up
in the mountains visiting my parents for christmas atm.

Anyway, I never changed interlaced/non-interlaced, or
field order settings on either of my conversions.
Downloaded TMPgenc here, and figured out that
the default settings on "Video - Encode Mode" seemed to
be Interlaced, while "Advanced - Video source type" is
Non-Interlaced.
-I recon both of these should be Interlaced, right ?

So all in all, what I'll try tomorrow is put interlaced
on both, plus change the field order.

Anyway, isn't it still weird that my MiniDV > firewire >
AVI > TMPgenc > SVCD ended up being perfect ?
I realize that the field order has something to do with
my Dazzle II card - but "Video Source Type" was still
Non-Interlaced. Doesn't this count at all ?

First of all, I never had motion problems with my
MiniDV > firewire > AVI > TMPgenc > SVCD. They've all
been perfect. AND I used the same settings for both:

Video:
-Constant bitrate
-Encode mode: Interlace
-Motion search: Very high q

Advanced:
-Video source: Non-interlaced
* This probably should be Interlaced on both AVI > SVCD
and MPEG2 > SVCD *
-Field order: Bottom field (field B)
* This probably should be 'field A' on my Dazzle II
MPEG2 files *
-Source aspect: 4:3(625) PAL (I'm in Europe)
-Video arrange method: Full screen
-noise reduction filter

It is excellent at describing most anything you need to know, including Interlacing/Deinterlacing and field orders -which sounds like an issue you are dealing with.

The site explains the terms, but it does not answer the question is Sony DCR-PC5 interleased or progressive cam. Of course Sony tech support has no clue what that is. My lines are most likely caused by wrong interleased source settings. I just dont know how the Sony cam saves video..... Any ideas?
