I am thinking of using HDMI when I receive my Samsung 46" DLP and an Onkyo S-780. I have a question though. I know that HDMI=video and audio+best quality. However, I don't think my receiver will have HDMI so how am I supposed to hook it up to the receiver? Is there an optical out on the TV or something? I am very confused. to clear it up:
Do I have to have a receiver that has an HDMI input if I want to use that for the TV but want digital audio hooked up to the receiver as well?

What are you using for a TV tuner? If a HDTV cable box (most common), you will have analog component, DVI and/or HDMI video out plus an optical and/or coax SPDIF for digital audio out. Any of the video cables can be used to the HDTV. SPDIF audio goes to your receiver.

This same basic hookup would be used if the tuner was DBS or an external over the air DTV tuner. If the tuner is built into the HDTV, it will have a SPDIF output that goes to the audio receiver.

so there is no way of connecting optical to a home theater receiver? i probably wouldnt care anyways... My question was though, for a dyd player. Say the dvd player had an hdmi out, and i connected that to the tv. HDMI carries audio and video, but are you saying I can still stream audio to the receiver by coax? It automatically deactivates the audio signal that is carried over HDMI and onto the coax? Or are two streams going out at the same time? Also, I heard it is best for a receiver to process sound on a dvd player, so would setting it up this way make the receiver process the sound? thx. What I am basically trying to do is clear up confusion about connecting stuff on how to get the best picture/sound possible with my hardware.

That would be in the DVD player menus. Often audio defaults to the HDMI connector unless you select something else. Make sure before you buy the DVD player.

    HDMI video to TV.
    AC3 audio to the receiver.

If you also want audio to come from the TV and if your player won't let you feed both HDMI and optical, you may need to feed analog audio to the TV.
