I installed the latest 9t version and followed all directions for installing the new binaries. Selecting the mpeg-4 option results in a movie that QT can't use (error -2041). Even selecting the psp profile yields the same result. VLC can play these movies but iTunes won't accept them (if QT won't, of course iTunes won't).

9s worked great (except for no H.264). I installed the 10.4.3 update but used the 9s version after the update and it worked fine. It was only after I installed 9t that things went south.

    Any ideas?

Where can I get the 9s version?

  2. 0.0.9t r3 can encode for iPod by using the PSP preset, as confirmed by many users. You can find 0.0.9s at http://homepage.mac.com/major4/ffmpegX_0.0.9s.dmg

Select XviD [.MP4] (ffmpeg) under the Video tab instead of MPEG4 [.MP4] (ffmpeg) after selecting MP4 as a Preset in the Summary tab and it will work fine.

When I use the "MPV Mpeg-4" setting, I get info in the progress timeline and see many lines of "AC EOB marker is absent pos=64". The resulting video may be played in VLC but QT doesn't accept it.

When I revert back to the 0.0.9s version (with its set of codecs), everything (except H.264) works.

Trying the XviD setting (per ahmontgo's suggestion) results in a 4kb file that only takes 1 second to finish encoding.

If someone (major?) would like to see them, I can zip the ffmpegx folders (from Application Support) I'm using for each of the two installations and post them on my website.

    I'm running a dual-2.0 G5, 10.4.3, QT7.0.3 "Pro" with mpeg2 codec installed. In my Library>QuickTime folder I have the following codecs:
    3ivx D4 4.5.1 for OSX
    AC3 Codec.component
    AppleIntermediateCodec.component
    DivX 6 Decoder.component
    FLAC_Decoder.component
    OggVorbis.qtx
    TSCC.component

I don't see, though, how these can be involved as v0.0.9s (with its set of codecs) works fine.

    Again, any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks

I should also mention (in case I've not been clear) that the ffmpegx folder inside Application support is named properly and I have been removing and replacing that folder as required for the proper version of ffmpegX.

Re-installed the 0.0.9s app and its required components.
    Restarted.
Launched and converted with no apparent problems (DV>mpeg4 for iPod).

De-installed all 0.0.9s components (including .plist)
    Installed the 0.0.9t components.
    Restarted.
Launched the app & converted the same DV file.
Progress shows normal completion but file has no preview and QT Player will not open it (although VLC will). iTunes rejects it.

"info" window (from the Progress timeline) shows this:

I believe this same message appears when converting this file using the 0.0.9s app (and its components). However, the resulting file is fine.

Nothing coming from a 0.0.9t conversion works. Most other codec selections result in a 1 second conversion time and a 4kb or 0kb file.

I guess I'll be staying with 0.0.9s although I should point out that Mpeg Streamclip seems to have no issues either before or after the 10.4.3 update. iSquint also seems to work as does MoviesForMyPod (although that app doesn't like .dv files very much).

    Well, I don't know..

I tried my AVI file -> MP4 using the xvid [.mp4] (ffmpeg) setting this time around, and Quicktime still says it's an invalid file (-2041) yet the same file plays fine with VLC.

I'm using 0.9t r4 (according to the About info), even though the text in the scroll box says it's r3.

I guess I'll have to try 0.9s as well and see if that helps.

    GrBear,

According to major's website, the 9s version uses a different set of mencoder and mplayer files. I also tossed the .plist from the 9t version and then restarted after the re-installation of 9s.

All (except for H.264) works now. I believe the H.264 problem was a known issue with 9s (IIRC).

I simply deleted ffmpegX off the hard drive and installed 0.9s, as well as downloaded and installed the binaries.

Well, suprise suprise.. using the exact same settings as previous (inc. high quality and 2 pass encoding), this time it worked just fine. It's obviously an issue with 0.9t (or the version of ffmpeg it's using).

Very bizarre considering that others don't seem to be reporting this problem. Out of curiosity, what is your system info? (Hardware config, OSX version, QT version, "Pro"?, Apple's mpeg2 component installed?, etc.)

Maybe some of this info will help major track the problem and point to the resolution.

    Thanks

    I'm running:

    G4 sawtooth, upgraded from 500MHz to 1.2GHz
    1 Gig of RAM
    Mac OS X 10.3.9
    Quicktime Pro 7.0.3
    3ivx D4 4.5.1 codec
    DivX 6 codec

I even removed the codecs in case they were affecting QT's ability to decode the file, but it made no diff.

    Yes, very unusual.
