  1. Hello,
I have friend who just received a DVD either recorded in or purchased in England. I know there are region encoding that are not compatible, such as the US and Canada use NTSC and most of Eurpoe uses PAL.
Assuming this is why he can't play the DVD from abroad in any of his players here in the US, is there anything I can do for him, such as a conversion?
I'm not even sure if his DVDs are PAL. I have AVIcodec from a couple years ago, will that tell me? If not, is there a utility that will help me identify the codecs on his DVDs?
    Thanks for your time.

  2. Well we are region 2 here in the UK and USA is region 1 so if the DVD player is multi region should not be a problem.

Not sure if AVICodec will be any help but you can load a .vob into GSpot and if the video is 720x576 at 25fps will be PAL

Purchased (commercial) DVD's will have a region coding, recorded DVD's will not. All consumer DVD's meant for the UK market will be PAL.

Region coding and PAL/NTSC is not the same thing.

In order to play them in the US you would need a region free dvd player as well as one that does PAL to NTSC coversion.

  4. Yeah and also remember that some TVs will do pal to NTSC conversion too..actually you DONT need a region free player .. all players will allow you to change the region four times .. but most can be made region free very easily..
You should be able to view the content on a PC if you use dvddecrypter to place all the assets on your hard drive.

You are confusing a computer DVD drive or burner with a standalone DVD player....there are MANY players that cannot be hacked region free, changed to a different region and/or convert between PAL/NTSC and vice versa.

Region 2 NTSC isn't uncommon even though PAL is the standard for the UK. But, PAL may be the standard for the UK and Europe but Japan is in Region 2 as well and they use NTSC over there. For this reason all Region 2 or multi Region DVD players will happily play both formats. You can usually find a setting in the menu to set what format is output to the TV. Usually you get a choice between PAL, NTSC or Auto. In Auto mode it will output what is being played, in the others it will output what you have selected no matter what format the disc you are playing is.
