I was given a Sony VHS video tape of a show recorded in ENGLAND I live in USA. When I put the VHS video in my VCR, the audio sounded high-pitched and fasts speed like Chipmonks. The visual was scrambled. My VCR and TV books don't mention anything about how to view a VHS tape recorded in ENGLAND with a different format.

    Any suggestions?

The problem is that the TV standard in the US is NTSC which has a frame rate of 29.97 frames per second, the UK uses PAL which has a frame rate of 25 frames per second. Consequently, your VCR is playing back the tape 20% faster than it should be, hence the high piched audio. You will need a multi standard VCR that is capable of detecting that the tape is a PAL tape and playing it back at the correct speed.

You have to have a multi system VCR. But for just one tape it isn't worth it. There are loads of video shops who will transfer it to NTSC DVD at very reasonable coast. (Unless it's copyright)
