  1. I've been using DVD Shrink on it's basic form with a guide and it's been working fine. However, the movies look darker than the originals. How can I correct this?

Burner is NEC 3540A and media is TDK 16X DVD +R 4.7 GB Single Sided. DVD's are made in taiwan DVD+R47FCB50 and the label number is
    0 20356 48519 1

    Thanks.

they shouldn't look 'darker' but you're probably seeing the effects of crappy compression. you can use shrink in it's more complex form and make more space for better quality. (less compression) to me after 80-85% they start to look bad. 90 & up is good. look at some of the other guides!

Yeah some simple steps are to backup only the movie itself and eliminate unneeded soundtracks (like stereo only or commentary if you're not interested in the background). By leaving out the bonuses and cutting back on the audio and leaving just the 5.1 or main stereo track can significantly improve the final product.

  4. What is DVDShrink "more complex form"? I am copying "Dancing With Wolves" 183min. Now when I used DVDShrink I only picked the movie. 5.1 audio, and 9MB of subtitles for a total of 3,601MB with 54.7% of video compression which I guess is terrible. What are other options?

Perhaps other choices would be to use 2 DVD's or use a DL DVD. But then where can I find the steps on how to do this with DVDShrink? If I use a DL DVD would my current player Panasonic RV-31 play it?

    Thanks.

  5. With a movie that long, you'll probably be compressing it too much with dvdshrink to get a great picture. Two things you can try are 1) use dvdrebuilder which encodes rather than transcodes to reduce the size of the video. Personally I haven't seen that great a difference between the two in actual practice, but others swear by rebuilder. If you download the suite, you get several freeware encoders keeping the whole thing free, thoigh there is a payware suite that has more features. 2) You can use dvdfab to break the movie into 2 pieces and put it on 2 disks. There is a payware version that has many bells and whistles, but when necessary I still use the old freeware version (0.17) and it works fine. Mr.Bass's site used to have it. The only drawback to the freeware version is that it doesn't deal with episodic disks very well, but there is a trick to use dvdshrink to do them. Nyah Levi

DVDRB is a great program to use to backup your dvd collections. The minimum $10.00 donation to the author of DVDRB no longer exists.
This is from DVDRB forum from JDOBBS Moderator:"Pro Edition Version 1.01 (FINAL)
Sometime during the day on October 8th (EDT) I will start sending out v1.01 (Final) to all VIPs. I am working on a couple final minor changes after which I will start mailing notifications. I'm posting the changes below a day early to ensure no one is surprised when the beta test period and associated VIP one-time-good-deals end. In the future VIP status will require a donation at the full listed price (see more info at http://info.dvd-rb.com)."

  7. I was able to install DVDRB and Avisynth but it seems you have to pay for CCE. Don't you need these other 2 above to be able to run DVDRB?

you can use any of the encoders listed on thier site. QuEnc and ReJig are free.
i didn't realize you were doing a 'movie-only' copy, that's what i was refering to by complex form. your of 3601Mb doesn't sound right. you can fit about 4460Mb on a dvd-r. is your target size correct under preferences (in shrink)?

  9. target preference set to

    DVD5(4.7GB)

I already installed the CCE's trial version. the other is Canopus ...

Now the question is how do I use this DVDRB?

no, what i was referring to is transcoding a movie more than 80-85% of original size is when you will start to see artifacts.

when you say your movie pauses after 85%, do you mean 85% of the total runtime? (ie. towards the end of the movie)? if so, cheap media is usually the first suspect.
