Yamada 6100 Question

I've just aquired a Yamada 6100 and I need some advice.

It'll play commercial DVD's fine, after some time loading, but it won't play any Divx/Xvid files. The disc spins for a while and it says "Disk Loading", but then it goes back to "No Disc".

I thought it might just need a firmware upgrade, but it seems to have the last one from December '03.

Does anyone know of another update after this? I can't find one through Google.

Maybe it's something else. Any info would be a help.

I don't know that particular Divx/DVD player but many of them cannot play media that has not been finalized. Be sure you finalized the discs.

try www.digitalathome.com .. These are ok players and I have no problem playing divx files.. however my first one broke down with similar symptoms to yours

Yeah, I'd already been to digitalathome, but didn't really find anything useful. I've just discovered my-yamada, but doesn't look like there's very much in the way of activity on their forums!

Anyway, I've tried a couple of things; namely cleaning the lens with a branded CD lens cleaner which seemed to do the job! Now reads discs with no problems at all. I also took the unit apart (as I managed to loose a CD inside it (not the best build quality from that point of view!)) and made sure everything was connected OK and removed some dust-bunnies that had set up nests on the motherboard! lol!

Anyway, as I say, it's working OK now, but I have one more question about playback:
I've managed to play a few Divx/Xvid files, both on CD-r and DVD-r and they play fine. But, I burned a DVD-r last night with a mix of Avi's;
one series of five episodes in Xvid Mpeg-4,
one series of 6 episodes in Divx v3 Mpeg-4 (Low Motion),
one movie in Xvid Mpeg-4
and one 20 minute tv episode in Divx v3 Mpeg-4 (Low Motion).

Oddly enough, the movie and 20 minute tv episode played perfectly, but the two series' didn't even show up in the root menu of the player, despite the fact thay the have the same encoding as the movie and tv episode respectivly.

Any ideas why this might be? I've done the usual taying-up-till-2am-searching-every-concevable-website but I couldn't find any answers to it.

Yes, I always finalise discs. If I'd not done so, then the two things that DID play, surely would not have done?

Interestingly enough, the same episodes that wouldn't show in the root menu on the DVD-r played when written to a CD-RW.

It doesn't make any sense to me, but if you know what might be causing it, I'd be all ears!

Get a few RW disks and experiment.
