I recently purchased a JVC GR-D295US Mini-DV Digital Video Camcorder on-line(and should get delivery in about 10 days, or less)

I understand that I need a Firewire card and cable to download the digital video from my camcorder to my PC in order to edit/author for DVD burning.

Does Anyone know what is a good PCI Firewire card for doing this?
[I know nothing about digital video, but used to be relatively experienced with VHS camcorder video capturing to my PC].

Can anyone help me in this hardware IEEE 1394 card/cable purchase and transfer (PC video capture?) process, PLEASE?? (want to buy it and be ready to go before my camcorder gets here)

I would appreciate Everyones more knowledgable(than mine) help on this.

    thanks,
    jA-

(PS--the below Dazzle "signature is old, and I've removed it) Now I'm going digital
    "Signature"......
I use a Dazzle capturing system that Only lets me capture into Mpeg. So that is all I work with. I never do any DV/AVI video.....

    Hello Joe,
Your best bet is to get a firewire card that has a Texas Instrument chipset on it. That seems to be the one that will work for JVC camcorders. I also have a JVC camcorder and that is what I bought. No problems thus far. Look at the JVC forums on www.camcorderinfo.com. They have some interesting reading material in regards to JVC and firewire. Reading a sticky on the forums from camcorderinfo, the following cards have TI chipsets:

    ADS Tech - PYRO PCI 64 (CircuitCity/USA)
    Belkin F5U503 (USA/WalMart, CompUSA)
    Dazzle DVClip (USA/CircuitCity)
    Pinnacle DVClip (USA)
    Pinnacle's DV/AV (USA/Costco)
    RetailPlus+ (Canada/WalMart)
    Studio 9 AV/DV (USA)
The following card is listed last as it comes with either a TI or Agere chipset, so you have to open the box first to ensure it's a TI chip on the card:
Adaptec FireConnect 4300 (TI chip, some have Agere chip) (USA)

    Good luck,
    Ethan

    Hi EGrier,

    Is JVC really THAT picky?
(this is getting way more complicated than I'd thought)

Where on that site do they discuss JVC and firewire card brands, please?

Here are a couple of stickies that are on the subject:

This issue is not just restricted to JVC from my understanding though. Some people have no probs at all some do though just to let you know. I bought a card that had a VIA chipset on it and didn't have any problems at all with capturing, at first. I don't know what happened, but when I wanted to capture some video from my camcorder at a later time, it didn't work. I could control the camera with no problems at all, just couldn't capture. So, I searched and looked all over the net for solutions and came across those particular threads. To make a long story short, I purchased a TI card and updated my DirectX and that solved the problem. But, to see other people's testimonies on the issue, I think that it would be a wise decision to get a TI card. I never did reinstall the VIA card to see if it would work. I didn't want to mess with something that was working.
