  1. I need to convert some anamorphic (16:9) AVI's to MPEG while preserving the anamorphic aspect ratio in the target MPEG file.

I tried Adobe Premier - it was able to import the AVI while preserving the anamorphic aspect ratio, but the export to MPEG was a problem - it insisted on converting the video to 4:3 with letterbox in the output file. There was no way to specify I wanted the MPEGs to preserve 16:9.

I tried VirtualDub, but it does only MPEG-to-AVI, and I need AVI-to-MPEG.

    Other recommendations?

most good mpg encoders can convert and set it to 16:9 like tmpgenc, mainconcept mpeg encoder, canopus procoder.
