so it seems that no matter which DVD i burn, whether i backup a DVD i already have, or make a new DVD out of an AVI file that i already have, my DVD's skip a lot on playback, often. i usually burn at the max speed, which is 4x. i tried burning a DVD at 2x(which is the lowest), same thing pretty much; certain scences, where alot of action is going on, the DVD player skips alot. i've tried pretty much all kinds of DVD players; computer DVD drives, home DVD players, etc.
what can be the problem? my burner is an LG DVD+-RW(model GSA-4040B), and i use Ritek DVD-R's.

Skipping is generally due to the media - be it poor quality overall, a bad batch of discs, or incompatibility with your burner, to name just a few common problems. I find it interesting that you say that the discs skip even on computer DVD drives, as I have never experienced this phenomenon myself, and my experience with PCs is that they will normally play anything satisfactorily.
Obviously the common denominator is the media and/or the burner (and more obscurely, possibly the burning software). All you can really do is a bit of trial and error with different media then test your results, and maybe try different software to burn (test again). IMHO you just need to test each part of the process independently until you find the source of the problem.
Maybe even look up your burner here:

... and see what other peoples' experiences have been like with certain media, and try to match media that is readily available to you with media that has provided suitable results for others using the same hardware. If in doubt, Google it. -

Assuming that the above reply is correct, and that this does turn out to be a media problem. The odds are in favor of that result. However, there are also a few other things that can cause these same symptoms.
I would also add this... it is not clear from your post, but are you compressing, at all? Too much compression can cause bizarre "pixellization" and "macro-blocking," and while this is not the same as "skipping," I have seen cases where people confused the result with skipping.
Always buy high quality discs, and always buy high quality discs that you know your own burner is very compatible with (and also ones that you know your players are compatible with). Do some searching, and you will find the same names come up again and again as being reliable media that are compatible with almost every burner out there. For me, this meant Taiyo Yuden. Always burn at a speed that is "safe" for your burner, and for those discs. And, always avoid trying to burn while multitasking. Check your system and make certain that no other hidden processes are trying to run in the background while you are actually burning (there have been people who picked up spyware and malicious software that was trying to take over and perform other tasks while they tried to burn a DVD). Make sure all drives are really running in DMA mode (do a search on this if you do not know what this means).
There are software programs freely available that will try to scan a burned disc and look for burning errors. Do a search, if need be, and try to run some of these on the problem discs, to see if you can at least verify that the actual burn was a bad one. Try to narrow the problem, to make sure it is really a bad burn (as opposed to a playback problem). I know you mentioned that you saw the same thing on your PC, but this is only one of several methods of testing, to be certain.
In short, this can be "controlled," and it can be diagnosed, and it can be stopped. It is not normal.

You can also try looking up your standalone in the DVD Players list and see what media others have used with your player.
Google is your Friend -
what else is odd is that i tried burning an SVCD also using a Philips CD-RW instead... and it skipped even worse. i guess my burner must be messed up then, ey?
