I would never claim any was the 'best', but I've been happy with AVAST or sometimes AVG for antivirus, both freeware versions. For trojans I use Spybot S&D working with Spyware Blaster. IMO it's not as important which ones you use but that you keep them updated regularly. (And stay out of the Russian Pron sites.
)
Having a good firewall helps too. Hardware preferred, and even an additional software one. -
ok thanks for your recommendation, but i dont understand what AVG is, can you clarify please, thanks
. i tried spybot and microsoft anti spyware, but they kept crashing. ill try spyware blaster. any other recommended software? thanks

AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
If your antivirus/anti-trojan programs are crashing, try booting to safe mode and running them. It sounds like you may already have some virus problems. As soon as you download any of the above programs, you want to update them for the best effect.
Spyware blaster works best for blocking trojans. Spybot can eliminate them, along with an antivirus like AVG.
There are a lot more out there, but these have worked for me. -
Very subjective on all counts.
For example AVG is a great scanner, but the active scanner portion is honestly worse then Nortons, but Norton itself is crap software so...
For the record I use AVG though, I just let it do and finish its daily scan.
Spyware wise I don't even know anymore. I rarely get the stuff now that I stopped using IE. -
Spybot and Microsoft's anti-spyware are the best for spyware IMHO, see if Adaware will work. As for Antivirus, If I was going to buy one it would be NOD32 because of how it barely uses any resources (memory, cpu) and scans very quickly. I've tried AVG before and wasn't very happy about its detection rate, but its free so I won't complain
. I believe Kaspersky a/v has arguably the best detection rate. A couple years ago I used Panda Platinum a/v and had no problems with it, except for the price.

TrendMicro's Internet Security (used to be PCCillin) has repeatedly been rated the best AntiVirus out there, by multiple publications and websites. I use it, and its great, has keept me clean and protected, and isn't a pain in the u know what like Norton and others that are always bugging you about whether or not to allow a program to run or access the internet or whatever.
Plus they just bought out a company that specializes in anti-spyware software, and are incorporating that into their anti-virus. -

Two thumbs up for AOL 9.0 Security Edition. It's your complete solution to anti-virus and spyware/pop-up/spam protection.
-
Never. You get a complete protection system with your subscription. It's the finest solution available today, in my opinion. I know there are people who dislike AOL for one reason or another but after being a member for 15 years or so, I have zero complaints. Service is reliable, tech support is competent, and the software itself improves with every update.
Their browser leaves alot to be desired, but then again I don't know anyone who surfs the web using their AOL software. -
thanks fiddler, and thanks fritzi for clarifying, appreciate it. yeah i dont use AOL, but i will try Ad-Aware along with the other ones, thanks
