  1. Hi,
what codec does the ATI MMC use?
I am trying to capture to MPEG 2 and i hear that the ATI MMC is the best program to use seeing as i'm using an nVIDIA card where can i get the codec used by the ATI MMC to capture using another program.

    many thanks in advance

  2. ATI MMC uses whatever format you specify, either MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, Windows Media and ATI VCR format. The program is not a codec.

But since that software only works with ATI cards, if you want MMC, you have to replace your card with an ATI All-In-Wonder.

  3. Sorry I think you misunderstood me. I know the difference between a capture program and a codec. I know that the ATI MMC does excellent MPEG 2 capture...what I want to know is if i can get my hands on the same codec used by MMC so that i can use it with another program. Kind of like capturing divx. Using whatever program you like, at the end of the day what matters is the divx codec not the program, mainly at least.

so if i'm not running MMC can i get the same codec used to encode MPEG2 in MMC so that i can use it to encode using a different program

I hope this explains what i mean

    Regards and thanks for replying

  4. non-linear: I have not noticed an option for Mpeg4 in MMC. Can you further explain about what you wrote about.

Wouldn't be possible. From my understanding, the MPEG2 encoding is a hybrid of hardware and software, so the only way to get the full advantage of it would be to have an ATI AIW card and the ATI MMC software.

@Tom Saurus: AFAIK, every version of ATI MMC I've had since 2003 has had MPEG4 options, although I've never used them, and I haven't used the ATI for capturing since February (I've used my Panasonic DMR-E85H for captures since then).

There is no such thing as an "MPEG-2 codec". MPEG-2 is the video format. There is no codec.

Now there are MPEG encoders and decoders, but that's not the same as a codec.

ATI uses Ligos-based MPEG encoding. And then it has the Cineplayer decoders in it's playback software.

Don't confuse MPEG with "AVI files" like DIVX or whatever.
