  1. Hello, I have a bunch of MPEG-2 files and I want apply some filters in Virtualdub but only allow me output as avi. Is there any way to output as the original format, e.g. installing maybe a MPEG-2/MPEG-1 codec and if yes, what codec do you recommend for that???.

    Thanks

While there is YMPEG in my opinion your best bet would be to frameserve virtualdubs output to your favorite encoder and encode that to mpeg 1 or 2.

  3. Another option is to use avidemux which can use MPEG-2 both as input and output.

The filters are a bit different than virtualdub, but it has most of the common ones.

  4. Thanks, I tried YMPEG, is really good, but only found the demo version that puts letters on the video after enconded, do you know if there is some freeware version of this???.

Frankly i never used it before. When I still used vdub I just frameserved to my encoder.

The author of VDub simply "doesn't do MPEG". Period. So it's nice that we get a VFW version of MPEG, but still there's another way around it if you don't want watermarks, or can't get frameserving to work for you...

If you want a recommended codec, just use a codec like HuffYUV. It's free and virtually lossless.

You can input your file into VDub, make your changes, apply the filters, then output to HuffYUV to retain all its quality.

Then you can load that into your favorite MPEG encoder to finish the job.

While Puzzler's way can work, frameserving is really very easy if you just follow baldricks guide(click the work "frameserve" in my first post or click the link in abond's post). And there is no need for an intermediate file using huffy if you frameserve.

most of the time i Use AviSynth and frame serve to CCE

I use virtualdubMod for a few special tasks,

but those have been further reduced by the use AvsP, which i was introduced to by this forum

AvsP gives you a GUI into avisynth to let you see the results of your script changes, filters etc.. like virtualDubMod does

  11. Frameserving, as freebird suggested, is the best option and gives you the most control and options.

If you don't want to frameserve and just want to use simple edits and filters, avidemux works in a similar fashion to virtualdub and can input/output mpeg (and other formats that vdub doesn't have support for)

And I'll agree too that frameserving is the best option - it avoids one whole step and you don't have to allocate all that space for the big temporary AVI file in between.

Using HuffYUV is the best answer in case Astrogirl can't get frameserving to work right away and needs a quick solution in the meantime...

  13. Thanks to everyone for the help, I decided use Avidemux, is pretty easy and convert my files into the format I want all in once step. The filters are great. My favourite tool from now!.

What about AVCHD editing with vdub? Possible?

Also, is there loss in quality after editing and frameserving to an exterior codec or would that depend on the exterior codec?

You can use the directshow input driver with most AVCHD types to open directly in vdub, or thru avisynth. For the directshow input driver, you have to have it setup correctly, and activate it with dropdown menu, and you need haali media splitter and a proper decoder (you can use ffdshow, just enable h264, or something like coravc)

The loss in quality depends on what codec you use on export. e.g. if you use lagarith or huffyuv, it's lossless, something like DivX or XviD is lossy and quality would depend partly also on your settings used

1st, thank u for the reply...2nd, so I would output the mpg as huf the compress? I guess if I want to retain quality i'd have to. Sounds great.

Can you direct me to a few tutorials on directshow and how to impliment that? Much appreciated, too, by the way! I'll let u all know how it went.

No, just frameserve to your encoder. Frameserving is the passing of uncompressed, processed frames directly from VirtualDub to the encoder, without going to an intermediate file.
