    I am using winxp.
    When I open the device manager it is empty. There is nothing there but the computer appears to function ok.
    How do I restore the device manager.

  2. You can find help at Microsoft web site.
    Click START,RUN,then type services.msc,ENTER,then look for Plug and Play,select Enable.
    Hope this will fix your problem.

    Can you post a screenshot of what you see when you go to the Device Manager ?

    Thanks for trying to help. I solved the problem by booting into safe mode
    and bringing up device manager which was ok. I then rebooted normally and device manager then worked. Kinda strange though.
