    Hi,

I'm trying to follow the guide procedure for converting an AVI to VCD. It suggests opening the avi file with Virtuadub but I get an error:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "XVID". Require Video for Windows compatible codex to decompress video."

What do I need to do to keep Virtuadub happy?

    Thanks Redwudz,

I just found it myself and installed and Virtualdub is working now.

There's so much information on this site it's hard to figure out where to look. Don't ask me to find it again, I guess it will take a while to get used to where everything is.

I'm already amazed at how complicated video is, I never imagined. I figured rather than keep reading I'd embark on some small projects to better cement things in my mind.

Virtualdub is a good tool to learn if you are working with AVIs. It does editing, filtering, extracting audio, saving video in several AVI formats, frameserving to a MPEG encoder,.....The list goes on.

A couple of other indispensable programs are AVIcodec and/or Gspot. They are used to identify the video and audio formats of a file, the codecs you need and other information.

Spend a little time in 'Tools' to the left.<<<< Just about anything you might need is there. The 'Guides' above that are very extensive and cover most any type of project. If you get lost with a term, the 'Glossary' is there too. Good luck.
