  1. i've used a vhs-dvd machine to digitize an ntsc tape, and in the process its worked well, except that a weird error has happened. Most of the video is fine, but a few inches of the top part of the video has been moved down to the bottom of the screen, under a black bar. Its as if the vertical-hold control had been a little bit wrong.

Is there a way to cut the bit off the bottom, and move it back to the top where it belongs? I don't expect it to be a seamless merge, its ok if there is still a thin black line separating it. Or if that is not possible, can I just crop the bottom off altogether? Thanks very much.

  2. From reading that page, IMO 'overscan' isn't my problem. I believe the error is related to the machine choking on the NTSC signal (I'm in Australia, with PAL equipment). There is quite a lot of good image, but it has been shunted down to the bottom of the screen. If I can save it, and put it back to the top, that'd be great. If not, I'll settle for just cutting it off alltogether (I won't try stretching th e remaining video)

Any chance of a screenshot to better explain /demonstrate your problem ?

See How do I upload screenshots ? for pointers.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. well that was very frustrating trying to get a screenshot from W.M.P.10 -- it just wouldn't do it. I could paste the image in, but after saving & rechecking, there was somehow nothing there.

Oh well ... at least in the process of looking closely, I've realised that what's really happening is that the bottom strip I'm seeing is a _copy_ of what's happening at the top of the screen. So I don't need to save it and move it up, I just need to cut it away alltogether.

As to what software I've got access to, I'll have to check the A/V lab at uni. But certainly besides that I'm happy to use anything I can download & try. Thanks!

To cut the bottom and paste on top you could use AVISynth to crop into two pieces and then stackvertical to rejoin in the different order.
