I glanced at this thread and it made me curious about some commercial dvds I own that have this. The dvd has subtitles on the top and the bottom of the screen (a translation of both the lyrics and dialog). I know that graphical overlays are used on dvd but how would one create these? I'm mostly just curious about the how not really making them myself.

In the first pic in the thread to which you linked I created 2 complete sets of subs, one for top and one for bottom. After he said he used AutoGK which accepts only one subtitle file, I combined the 2 files into one. Using freeware, you can use Sub Station Alpha to create the SSA format text file followed by MaestroSBT to create an SST format graphical subtitle suitable for authoring using the free Muxman or the commercial program Scenarist. You can also create graphical SON files useful for DVDLab and Maestro. Of course, the big DVD production houses use very expensive programs to do the same thing.

Thanks for the information. Maybe I'll give it a try especially since I don't have to spend money.

I found a way to make sup and idx/sub txt that can be anywhere on the screen that can be made from srt,.ass and ssa and also edit the sups and idx/subs from extracted from dvds and blu-ray.
For txt based subs i load them into easySUP and and convert to sup, then load the sup into BDSup2Sub and click on the bottom right panel and set the position for the txt and save each change and the export to the format i want such as idx/sub/,sup,sup/ifo,xml/png.I think, therefore i am a hamster.
