I did a search on RV10 in this forum and I didn't find any relevant hits so I don't think my question is a repeat.

I recently got some MKV files and they work great with the Matroska pack and the Core Media Player. Problem is, obviously, I can't play it on my DVD (which can read AVIs) since it doesn't recognize the RV10 video format. Is there a not too painful way of converting RV10 to divx/xvid? I read somewhere there may be a problem with frame rate since the MKV container allows for variable frame rates and AVI doesn't.

RV10 = RV9 EHQ, so maybe if you search for that instead?

mencoder should work, not sure how it would handle VFR input though.
mencoder -ovc xvid -xvidencopts pass=1:etc...... -oac mp3lame, etc.
Also anything that can convert via dshow or use AVISynth with directshowinput().

Maybe I should first ask how can I find out if the video is VFR? When I run it thru GSpot (v 2.21) the video and audio sections give me all n.a.'s. The only part that gives me some info is the Direct Show Render section where it says Video src Type 4cc: RV40, audio src unknown, and then the audio and video paths.

  4. Problem here is that Realvideo, since RV9, can be VFR and you won't even notice it, as the encoder will decide to drop frames by himself, and it won't tell you at all.

You could find out yourself by looking at the timestamps of the video blocks in your MKV file. There is a CLI tool called mkvinfo.exe in the MKVtoolnix package that would allow you to do that.

Overall, i don't think what you are trying to do will have a good result.

Conversion to MPEG2, instead of a MPEG4 (DivX/XviD) AVI , could work because MPG is a more modern container than AVI and supports VFR in principal. If your standalone works with it, i don't know. It should if it is MPEG compatible.

For encoding of MKV files into MPEG, deinstall any modern matroska packs and install the old matroska 1.0.3 pack (only gabest splitter will work, not Haali). Then open the MKV file in TMPGencoder, using its DirectShow source reader filter.

  5. converting OUT of realmedia formats is never fun...i have done it once or twice, successfully, using tmpgenc and using realalternitive...but be warned, realalternitive messed up firefox (at least to me) a while back...im not sure if that issue has been resolved either..made it crash every time i tried to open a .wmv file on a website.

Thanks for the answers guys. It sounds like quite a mess, and I have way too many files that would need converting. Guess I'll just watch them on my PC.

Just occured to me. Do you mean Real Video 10 or the fourCC RV10? Because Real Video 10 = RV40, RV10 = RealVideo 5, which I think was basically H.263.

Kind of like how WM Video 9 = WMV3, although I guess that isn't an issue till we get to WM Video 15 which would be WMV9.
