  1. i haven't tried just yet. but is it "easily" possible to have a pc server as a tv capture card, and then using some software, i think vlan player.... to stream the tv capture from the pc to a laptop in my house?
and by stream i mean, control channels and turn on and off the capture?

and would this work on only one link, or can i connect multiple laptops or wireless clients and control the channels?

and how much network bandwidth would be needed? you guys think 5mbps is enough for one stream. or will one stream peak my wireless link, which is 802.11g 54mbps.

    any ideas on this?

    You can stream with
    http://www.videolan.org/ or
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

but neither will control the source like you want. Try asking on the VLAN forums

My 2 cents, if you are going to record, do it locally on the server not the client. You need to remote control the source machine in some way. Also, expect many seconds of encoding delays over a wireless LAN.

  3. i'm checking out their site now. hmm, doesn't look like at first glance there is info on how to control the streams. so maybe i can't?
i might have to look into specific ip tv software...

If I understand what you are saying, try Webscheduler.

There is a modified version somewhere that allows streaming of the mpeg-2 stream over the network, where the banwidth you require is the same as the video bitrate, ie. around 7mb/s. I couldn't find it but I know it is out there. The program basicly allows you to set up an EPG, and record programs via an online interface. Good luck [/url]

I could change channels using Star Media Center. It is also possible with videolan but it is very very very complex, see http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=7065

but if you have dtv then does http://dvb-ws.sourceforge.net/ looks better.

  7. so if i use this Star Media Center (which seems to be the easiest and best so far). can i change channels remotely using WMP9?
that's my whole idea. otherwise there's a buncha other options out there for simple streaming. but actually controlling the remote channel would be a plus

Don't forget the latency. You will have 20-50+ second delays in what you are seeing over wireless LAN.

  9. that bad, how come? dvd bitrate isn't more then 10mbps, i got 54mbps for wireless. gigabit for lan.

well just as long as audio and video are in sync and not lagging.

you must play with star media center. wmp9 doesn't have any built channel switcher.

An alternative is possible when you use a dvb PC card (like skystar2) and progdvb.

WiFI, Lan, even internet (good dsl connection) is possible... One source, many clients!

Your goal was to put live TV on your LAN. TV card input needs to be encoded (WMV or VLAN) to be placed on the wifi network. That is what causes the delay.

If you are just playing files, you will only see the latency of the network.

Those specs are for peak data transfers under ideal conditions. Video streams require continous sustained transfer. You can expect about a quarter of those rates best case and there will be stream drops unless network priorities are carefully managed.

The wireless G connection is more likely to run at sub B rates most of the time if you are moving around. Easy to test this, just play a media file off a network drive from your laptop to the WMP or other player.
