  1. I did a search, but could not find a free program to convert DVD video to Windows Media. Could someone help me? Is it possible to do this with Nero?

    Just to expand on this:

Use DVDDecrypter in IFO Mode to rip to one big VOB file - you'll need to go to Tools > Settings, and on the IFO Mode tab, set File-splitting to None. I'd also use the Stream Processing mode so that you eliminate all the unwanted audio streams, etc etc while ripping.

Open VOB in virtualdubmod, or virtualdub-mpeg2. Save out to an AVI - what codec you use is up to you, but for premium quality I'd look at using a DV codec (~ 13GB per hour), or DivX/XviD 1-pass with either the bitrate pumped right up, or in CQ mode with a quality value of either 1 or 2. Direct Stream Copy the audio.

Open AVI in Window Movie Maker (or if you really want to get your hands dirty, Windows Media Encoder) and encode to WMV. I like the High Quality Video (large) template when I'm doing DVDs - this uses VBR video and audio.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'd run the VOB's through DGIndex and then just frameserve with AVISynth.

...or just use TMPGEnc Xpress, which does it all (but it's not free).

  10. is there anway to get this into an mpg file that moviemaker can understand WITHOUT converting twice ? this would make 3 conversions. once from asf to mpg2 then from mpg2 to avi and then from avi to wmv ? I would like to avoid the 3rd conversion if possible (plus it takes a long time and its only 8 minutes of video) its custom stuff I did with my multipod. I can not go from asf to wmv cause I first have to edit it etc... and I do this by going to dvd which does my splicing adn gets me a single wmv and not a bunch of little peices

and it seems moviemaker wont touch mpeg2 either so I guess I have to convert a 3rd time.

Why don't you convert asf to AVI, do your edits in virtualdub, save out to AVI using Direct Stream COpy and then open the AVI in WMM ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

yep, you're doing it wrong. Use a DV codec like the panasonic DV codec and it should take up roughly 1-2GB, or use DivX or Xvid with a high bitrate (2000-4000kbps).
    If in doubt, Google it.

    also a newbie

    - so let me make sure I understand as I am interested in editting my DVR created files in MovieMaker as well.

I need to run the SVCD or DVD files I recorded ( usually MPEG2's) through 2 separate pieces of software - - DVD Decrypter and then Virtual Mod before I can import as a .avi into Movie Maker?

I would be interested in anyone's experience with another piece of software - VIDEO REDO? Is that a more efficient tool to get the DVR (a LITEON LVW-5005x) recorded files from my VHS into MovieMaker?

Someone also mentioned TMPGENcexpress - is that a single piece of software that will get my DVR files into .avi format for MovieMaker?

I went to both the VIDEOREDO and TEMPGENC websites and I am still confused.

As an aside - you wonder why one of these DVR manufacturers don't wise up and give you a format that is compatible with PC movie editting software....I would buy it in a heartbeat......
