My girl got a new PC. It's a Hitachi of some kind. Anyway, she got it last month but didn't tell me until today that she has this problem. After the Welcome screen, windows seems to just stall for no reason. It's not accessing the HD, it just sits there. I can't click the start bar, because it's LIKE it's trying to do something and then if I do click the cursor turns to the hour glass. If I right-click on the desktop, same thing. After a good 4 or 5 minutes, it boots everything up in a second. Stuff shows up like messenger and the internet connection icon.
First thought was, regcleaner and get that crap out of there that wasn't needed. Wasn't much to clean out. Nothing in the Startup. I couldn't figure it out. I don't want to format just yet because I don't know what drivers my girl has and doesn't have. She's gonna call Hitachi and ask them WTF is going on, but I thought someone here might have an idea? Anyone?

No, the information is too vague. It does sound like something is running during start up, but there are too many possibilities.
Maybe install SpyBot S&D, Spyware Blaster, along with a antivirus and see if they find anything. Run them in Safe Mode.
The startup file doesn't show everything that loads. It may just be a windows or regular program that is trying to check a non-existent file and finally giving up. You can step through the early part of the boot process by hitting F5 during the boot and selecting the command prompt mode to ask for permission for each step. Sorry, I can't go into that mode to explain it further at the moment.
Check your processes in Task Manager, maybe something looks odd. Look at all the programs loaded. Some may load drivers early and have problems.
I'm sure there is a easier method, but I haven't found much.
Sometimes the easiest solution is to reformat and reinstall. -
its also posible that its looking for something thats isnt there ,drivers of something or a hardware device that isnt loaded properly..
2 ideas.. run msconfig and go to startup and uncheck everything.. reboot see how things work if all is fine start returning things to the startup one at a time..
another is go into control pannel and go to device manager see if there is any conflicts etc. -

msconfig as already mentioned
also run services.msc and see which services are starting when you boot, there may be many that you simply don't need (print spooler for example if you don't even have a printer)"To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

How much RAM does it have? Have you disabled the unneeded services? How many programs are in the system tray?
When you run msconfig, how many terminate and stay resident programs do you see running? -
I will check when I get home to be absolutely sure...thanks for the help. I think it does have 256MB of ram...I could be wrong, but I don't think they put in anything less nowadays here in Japan anyway.
