Hi all, earlier today I was trying to cut part of an AVI file I found on my hard drive. I used the standard Windows Movie Maker 2.1 to edit the file. The file I was trying to edit was approximately 120 MB in size. I tried to load the file onto Movie Maker and my computer crashed. I made two more attempts and I got the same results. I came to the conclusion that the problem was probably caused by the file size being large. The reason I am posting here is to ask if there are any programs that can cut and join large AVI files? Or does anyone have a fix for my problem with Movie Maker? I plan on joining the edited file with another file that is approximately the same size so this program has to be really good with large files. Also, I would preferably like the program to be free but if no program exists, a trial version will do. Thanks for any help!

I tried to load the video file onto VirtualDub but I got this error message:

    Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DIV3' (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 [Hack: DivX Low-Motion])

VirtualDub requires a video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

I think it is because the video files that I will be uploading are DivX, sorry for not stating that in my first post. I guess my question now would be, is there a program that can cut and join DivX AVI files? If so can you tell me which one(s) and if it is free or shareware. Thanks for the help!

  5. Install the DivX 3.11 codec : http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html and see if that works. I believe I have had the same problem before also and this solved it.

Ah, thanks everyone. I got DivX running and I had no problems cutting and joining. The video clips now look perfect. Thank you for all the help!
