like sony vegas pro or windows movie maker.

    the video is an .avi

    on gspot:

    Codec:WMV3
    Name:WMP v9 (VC-1 Simple/Main)
    Status:Codec(s) are Installed

in vegas it has the "stream attributes cannot be determined". i tried to open it in virtualdub and virtualdubmod but neither of those could read it either. it plays fine on media player though.

  4. It's unusual to find WMV3 in an AVI file. Try installing this:

    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/WMV9_VCM

Note that WMV3 is the fourcc for the codec used in Windows Media version 9. Did GSpot show the container as AVI? It's possible it's a .WMV file that was renamed with an AVI extension.

Among many other possibilities, you can try installing both AviSynth and the plug-in VFAPI. Then, write a script like this one, using NotePad...

    AviSource("c:\folder\myclip.avi")

...and frameserve it to Sony Vegas.
