  1. hello, i have a DVD ready to be burned to disc. but the image aspect ratio is off somewhat, causing the people to look a little too tall and thin. i was wondering if there is a way to edit the ifo files so that it would widen the image when played back. i'm assuming some letter box bars would show on the top and bottom and that is alright by me.
i dont have the source files and i'm not interested in re-encoding the files as the quality is not that great to begin with.
i searched the forums for topics like "stretch vob files", etc. but could not find the answer i was looking for. i would appreciate any advice on how to do this (and what calculations are needed). i'm guessing, but i'd like to stretch the image about 5%.
    thanks as always!

    msimon7,

Open the movie IFO (VTS_0?_0.IFO) in IfoEdit. Click on the line under 'Title set (movie) attributes'. Select Aspect Ratio = 16:9, Resolution = 720x480, Automatic Pan&Scan. Save the file.

If you're watching on a wide screen tv it should fill the screen or close to it depending on the aspect ratio of the movie.

If you're using a 4:3 TV, then you should see the movie with black bars on the top and bottom.

    Regards,

    Chas

  3. hello. thanks for the reply. the film is actually already 16x9 and i'll be watching on widescreen tv. the problem i'm having is that it looks to be encoded wrong originally. i was wondering if there is a way to "squish" the image a little thru some ifo edits or something - without re-encoding. i hope i'm making sense
when i look at the movie in powerdvd and uncheck keep-aspect-ration and drag the video window to the right to stretch the movie wider a bit the people are properly proportioned. so that's what i was hoping to do in a sense.
if this is not possible, i may be heading over to the encoding forums with another question...

You must reencode. 4:3 and 16:9 are the only aspect ratios for dvd, you can't make any custom aspect ratio.

  5. i was getting that feeling
i did want to keep it at 16x9, but was hoping somehow to tweak something so that the player would pad some letterbox bars on the top/bottom to get things in proportion.
off to the encoding/conversion forum to see what the best technique is for extracting video from vob files and then letterboxing them...
    thanks
