  1. WHen I convert a DVD to DIVX fro viewing on my tube TV with a Philips 5192 player, the aspect ratio seems weird, it just doesn't look right.

I use TempgEnc Xpress 4.4 to convert the movie.

Most movies are 16:9, within Xpress 4.4 do I need to reset the ratio to 1:1 and resize to 720x384?

or do I just leave the 16:9 raio intact and just rezie the movie resolution or vice versa, or do I do both or am I just plain wrong on all counts.

    probably wrong on both counts.
not sure what you mean though

    first.
leave source aspect rartio at 16/9

    second
    it's 720x400
    with aspect set to 1:1

    3. there are profiles set up,
    they may restrict width.
    either remove profile restriction,
    or go to 624x352

Or use AutoGK, which will calculate the correct aspect ratio for you

  4. Or leave the frame at 720x480 and use the Xvid DAR setting to specify 16:9 playback. If TempgEnc Xpress won't let you do this encode 1:1 then use Mpeg4Modifier to change the DAR flag.

Some DVD players may not show Divx in the correct aspect ratio. Testing has shown that the old Philips DVP-642 does not show Divx in the correct aspect ratio. Other Philips models may have this problem as well. You can follow the suggestions but if it's a problem with the player they won't help.
I'd advise trying the suggestions and maybe you will get lucky and the issue you had was an encoding issue (the suggestions should fix that) rather than a DVD player issue (not fixable).

  6. The newer Philips players support MPEG4 DAR flags. But yes, some players don't, especially older players.
