  1. I'm using XMPEG to convert DVD to DivX without ripping as I don't have sufficient hard disk capacity to rip the dvd first. I'm getting reasonable results but have a few questions:

    1. When I convert a DVD, the end product (either 4:3 or widescreen)is less than the full screen (e.g. a widescreen film is "windowed" at the sides as well as the top. This doesn't happen when I use DVDx - but that gives me all sorts of ausio/video sync problems. Any ideas ?

    2. The volume level of the end DivX seems to be pretty hit and miss - sometimes its fine, sometimes it much too low. Not sure if its possible to adjust this during the conversion process (rather than use virtualdub after the event). Any Ideas.

    3. Pixel aspect (as opposed to the film aspect ratio) - what does it actually mean and is there a sensible default setting for watching on the pc

    4. Lastly, is there a better method for going direct from DVD to DivX without ripping first.

any help on the above questions very gratefully received.

    cheers

  2. hrm....are you encoding directly from the dvd in the dvd-rom drive?

if so, it could overheat your dvd and dvd-rom drive and damage both...
