They advertised this on top of the box and on their displays yet when I bought this player and started looking at the manual, I can't seem to find this feature listed there so I don't know if this player automatically do a 4x video upsampling that makes the video look better or do you have to turn it on somewhere in the menu? Also how do you check the firmware version of this player?

I am also looking for this feature on the dvp642. I just purchased an HDTV 50 inch Sony and I would like to try the 4x upsample to see what the hype is about. I thought it would appear in the menu once I chose the progfressive option and used component cables, but no such luck. I'm still looking for the 4x upsample option.
Anyone get this to work or can tell us where to look?
Thanks. -
I have the DVP-642 and I have never attempted to use this feature as I have nothing that could properly display upsampled video. I am HIGHLY skeptical that upsampling will actually make the video look better. In theory, upsampling should result in worse quality. I would advise you not to get your hopes up too much for this feature on such a cheap player.
I don't know how to access this feature since I can't test it.
The DVD Players list to the left under LISTS tells how to check the firmware version of your player, but I don't remember how to do it. I haven't checked mine in about a year. -
My hopes aren't really high for this feature, but I do want to try it anyway. It seems to be all over their display advertisements in the store and on web sites. Funny how you can't find it in the manual or find the option in the Menu.
There's got to be a trick to turning it on and I'm hoping that someone here can show us that trick. -
Video DAC: 54 MHz/12-bit with 4x video upsampling
I think that's an inbuilt feature of the video chipset. -
So you're suggesting that it's turned on all the time? I had thought of this too. It's possible, but then you would think that they would mention that in the manual. Maybe they left it out of the manual as to not confuse people...like me?
Either way, DVDs look nice on the 50 inch Sony. I missed a lot when watching widescreen on my older 27 inch.
