  1. I just got this burner and i flashed it to LD3540_1W5 for bitsetting.

now, im using TDK dvd-r, made in japans. TY02.

I dont understand why my burn is burning at a MAX of 2.8x.

I tried burning by setting to max.. 2.8x was max. I set it to 8x, 2.8x was max. I dont know what to do to fix it. This media is reliable and i should not be getting these bad speeds. I know i didnt change DMA settings, i dont even know what they do. please help , thx.

Do you find that the 3540 burns -Rs ok (not making many coasters?) I'm getting ready to buy a writer, and I'm trying to figure on which one to get since i will burn MOSTLY -R &-RW?

  6. I know the 3520a burns -R fine but it does a better job on +R when using bitsetting. My Pioneer 109 though problematic give better quality -R burns when it decides to burn correctly at all.

  10. Update. The 3520a does not burns my TYG03 -Rs fine. I've burned several of them now at varous speeds and the leadin seems to hang and then the burn goes fine. However on playback the discs all skip for a few seconds right at the begining. I'm not sure if the 3540 would have the same issue but it's worth checking into. IMO NEC has always been better with +R media.

The Plextor burns both DVD-R/+ well. Benq 1620 burns both formats well too. With the latest official firmwares from Benq burning DVD-R is better than before. If money is no problem for you then get the Plextor 716. For the price of one Plextor 716a drive you could buy 2 BENQ 1620's. Also Plextor has a new model called 740 which is a REBADGED BENQ 1640 drive. Funny how Plextor decided to use REBADGED BENQ drives for their model 740. Check out the BENQ & PLEXTOR forums at CdFreaks.com

Probably because they share QC departments.....

My advice, keep the box and slip around for a couple weeks.....Both drives are very good, but have unusually high rates of early failure. I think Plextor 716's are beyond that now (been quiet lately). The 1640 hasn't shown the issues that continue to plague the 1620's.

As budz said, cdfreaks.com has some good information on their forums.
