I was talking with my friends about backing up regular movie DVDs and they say it only takes them ~20 minutes. It takes me at the minimum, 40 minutes, going from DVD9 to a 4.7 gig DVD-R. This seemed odd to me considering I built my computer a week ago and here are my specs:

    DVD Burner: NEC ND-3520AW
    3.6 ghz P4
    3 gigs DDR2 Ram
    300 gig HD
    800 mhz FSB mobo

All their computers are at least a year old. The only difference is they have a DVD reader + a dvd writer, I only have a writer. We are all using DVD X Copy Xpress Platinum. Why is it it takes me twice as long (and up to over an hour with DVD Shrink) to copy a DVD? The ripping and encoding alone takes 20-30 minutes with DVD X Copy. Any ideas?

  2. Probably cause your writer has a Rip guard on it, you're limited to 2x reads. You can get firmware to change that but at your own risk. cdfreaks should have it.

You're rip speed will be a maximum of around x2.5, where if you rip using a DVD-Rom drive it will be upto the maximum of the drive

I went out and bought a DVD-Rom as I got fed up with the slow rip speeds, you could use a hacked firmware to bypass the built-in ripping restriction of your burner, but its there for a reason, some say they have no problems some report a dead burner soon after

Thats your first slowdown, using DVD Shrink can make a difference as well, the higher the compression ratio, the more work it has to do, and the longer it will take

Try removing all unwanted audio and subtitles, and also if its movie only try editing the movie start and end, you can easily knock of 2-3 minutes from the start of a movie, this goes towards increasing your movie quality and also will speed up DVD Shrink slightly

You could also try looking at Slysoft CloneDVD or DVD2One, both will do a full DVD in about 30-40 minutes from ripping it, I always rip to my computer first, save your DVD burner for what its designed for

Movie only should take about 10-20 minutes, again dependant on the movie length and how much compression is needed

If you have any more questions, try reading the guides on here or from me, I make them as simple as possible with plenty of pictures, so total beginners can use them not to make you look stupid, but not everybody knows what they are doing
