I want to keep things simple and make some decent VCDs of my VHS tapes. I'd like to capture a direct 352x240 MPG1 stream without an internal card (is there a decent USB for this?) so I can skip the tmpgenc stage and save time and re-compression.

What would be the best device for this?

Alternatively, I could go for broke and get the Dazzle DV Bridge (eventually I plan to go DV/DVD), but, unless someone can tell me otherwise, I imagine VCD creation with it would be very time consuming. I'd have to capture to DV (resulting in a huge file), then convert it with tmpgenc.

Can anyone give me a few clues based on this rambling?

    Thanks
    Mojo

I have ATI AIW 128 card. I can capture VCD Compliant mpeg directly without using TmpegEnc, however, the video quality is OK but not great. Using an USB device to capture may not be desirable, because USB connection is too slow for capturing, you may get a lot of drop frames. I also have a DAZZLE USB, the quality of the caputure is a lot worse. I also use my AIW card to caputure to MPEG 2, then I convert with TMPEGEnc to VCD/SVCD format, the result is great. If you don't have ATI Card, I think for the best result is to capture to AVI using Huffy lossless Codec, then convert with TmpegEnc. May be someone out there have a better suggestion.
