I have been having a strange issue with my 642 - when you play a DVD with subtitles, and you select the subtitles that you want from the disc menu, the player ignores your choice and starts the play without any subtitles. You have to turn them on with the remote. This is kind of annoying because the menu during play just says things like:
01/English
02/Spanish
03/English
so it can be hard to tell which ones are the ones you're looking for, and which are for the hearing impaired, or subtitles of the director's commentary, etc.
I'm not sure if this problem is tied in to a certain firmware, or native to teh player in general. Can anyone else confirm that they have or do not have this issue?

I HAVE had that happen but only w/ back-ups of DVD's on DVD-9 discs. This seems to be the only common trait on my "problem" discs but it may be due to me removing some things during the B/U process....(prohibited ops and such)

Its a strange thing - I've found it to be sort of intermittent. I've only really been seeing it on regular retail DVDs, but some do it and some don't, so I'm thinking it must be something in those discs which causes it. Its not really a big deal, as usually its easy enough to get the right titles going, but I started noticing it right after I'd upgraded the firmware and thought it may have been because of that. (I don't know that it didn't do it before, I just noticed it afterwards.)

Jbreaker - I have a DVP 642 and I have only seen this problem on one DVD that I can remember. I bought a DVD from Russia which was very oddly authored and it had this problem. This DVD had some other oddities about it too. I watch a lot of foreign movies with subtitles and I don't remember seeing this happen with any other DVDs.

I saw it most recently on the Cronos 10th Anniversary DVD - it was frustrating in that case, because I think there were 3 tracks of English subtitles - the normal one, one for the hearing impaired, and one that subtitled the commentary as well (definitely the first 2 - i can't remember for sure about the last one). Selecting one from the disc menu didn't do anything, so you had to pick with the subtitles button, and you'd wind up with one that had descriptions of all the sounds throughout the movie if you picked the wrong one, like [Doorbell riging] or [Whistling] or whatever. But other discs I've watched since have been fine, so I'm going to guess that disc just had some strange quirks to it.
