  1. I have a lite-on 1633 with the latest flash. The drive has done nothing but burn perfect disc's for 6+ month's. The problem is now i can't burn a dvd but can burn a cd. I've tried burning video and data dvd's but nothing but coasters. It starts to burn the lead-in, then changes to image, then fails after about 5 minutes and says that the disc is incompatible. Burned a music cd and no problem at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing here is did you just buy some dvd media recently of a different brand , this caught me out , 20 magmedia's , and all were rubbish , not one succesfully burned , yet tdk in test was perfect ...

Got my money back on those ...

Did you flash the drive prior to this problem ?

Check for an update , and make absolutely sure and deadset its for your unit .

My bios was on an europian site , the unit I got was not to be sold in au , did I give the seller an ear shot full .

What other dvd authoring software do you have installed ?

Nero and ezycd creator (not sure if name changed) , do not like each other at all - you can tell this if you can not see files on cds or dvds when you explore their content , this is an aspi error .

Fix this with forceaspi package after all dvd burning products are uninstalled - appears to be a registry issue ...

How old is this unit and how much work has it done ?

I normally give my drives away after 2000 cd or dvd burned , the lense's are not indestructible and do wear out if you are in a dusty envirourment .

Just my luck , bloody great truck stop nearby , heaps of dust here ...

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I doubt if anything else will cause you problems , but I would question the updated bios .

Try asking in the lite-on forums about this issue .

Their technical service is near useless , unless you have a phone number and the name of the person who runs their technical department ...

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes , tick me off with rubbish , and I will drive 8 hours to get satisfaction , nobody blows me off over the phone ...

You dont get action unless you take action , thats my policy since 2004

I think Bjs covered most of it, but I would add, try blowing the dust off the lens with some canned air. If you get an improvement, try a cleaning disk.

CD burning and DVD burning are mostly separate things in a DVD burner. When burners fail, it's usually the DVD burner part that goes first. If you rule out software conflicts, (Very rare with your type of problem) media, and bad firmware upgrades then that leaves the burner.

All you can do with it is try to clean it. If that fails, replace it. There may be one in 10,000 that fail due to manufacture defect. You may have that one. If it's under warranty, replace it. Flashing the firmware with a non-factory version usually voids the warranty. They build them so cheap and fast these days that there will be a number of bad drives, just the way it is.
