Hi, I have a Pioneer dvr-108 with the lastest firmware (1.20).

Yesterday i wanted to burn a dual layer..i bought one locally..Datasafe dvd+r dl 2.4x..and thats as far as i got.

Running XP, the pc recognises a disk..opening the 'what you wanna do box'. I was trying to 'make my own dvd' with Nero..after all the work, the disc was 'unwritable'?? Its brand new!! Nero would not let me format it saying its not a RW disc (though the disc has RW on it?!)

Also, when me dvd exceeded the maximum 4.7 it did not recognize that the disc in the drive was a 8.5 dual layer ..blah blah.

Any suggestions, please? Lamens terms would also be usefull

Firstly, I dont think Dual Layer Re-writable discs exist yet. Only write once DVDR discs are dual layered at the moment.

The disc will have the RW logo because it a + disc which use these logos.

So, you have a dvd+r dual layer. Burn the disc as needed (be it dvd video, data dvd etc...) but you cannot format a dvd+r disc.

All DVD+R discs carry this logo:

It doesn't mean it is a Rewritable disc.

Ah, i see. Forgive my ignorance. It's the first time i ever tried to use dual layer, did not realize they are onle write once..also first time using +r..i normally just stick to 4.7-r's, but needs must!. I thought formatting may cure my problems..dint realise it was just a logo, oops!!

Any ideas why..when i tried to actually write onto it it said that the disc is 'not writable'? (or words to that effect.)

Does your burning software support DL? and does it recognize your drive as a DL drive?

If your videos are still in mpeg, and you want to burn as a dvd video to play in your standalone, first you would need to Author the files. Check under DVD Authoring for guides on how to make compliant dvd video files.

Then you can use Nero to burn as a dvd video compilation.

    AWEEGIN,

First thing I'd do is standardize around a format: NTSC or PAL. Sort that out first, and if need be use something like dgpulldown to convert
    PAL < - > NTSC.

Next, use TMPGENC (or whatever) encoder to convert to DVD compliant MPEG-2 video files for importing into Nero Vision Express to author your DVD. Use a software-based DVD player (WinDVD/PowerDVD, etc.) to view your newly authored DVD video to make sure menus, navigation points, etc., work fine.

Next, fire up Nero and burn your compilation to a DVD+R DL disc - be sure to check that Nero is seeing a DL disc, or you will just burn another coaster. FWIW, I use TMPGenc DVD Author 1.6 for all of my DL burns, just a preference of mine.

Post back when you've verified your VIDEO_TS folder with your software DVD player and let us know how the video(s) play, ok?

    Cheers!

Not a problem, aweegin - I wish you the best of luck in your conversions!

I apologize if that all sounds like a lot to do up front, but better to catch problems via software DVD player before making a few coasters, no matter how cheap they are!

Please post back and let us know how it went, ok?

    Cheers!

Well how bout that!! Sorted, i now have a disc that'll play in my xbox, so it should play anywhere!!

Not managed to get all the vids, bout half infact..but thats ok, obviovsly its increases the files in size ..wasn't thinkin of that!! Only trouble i had..used tmpgenc to make em pal, it converted half of them fine. The other half only got sound..no picture?! Which left enough to fill the 8.5g disc..so its ok, just puzzeling. I may tackle doin the rest another time, but it takes forever as my pc's not super fast..keeps me doin other things though..ha ha!!

Used T...DVD author, like you said to burn..if it works for you, that was good enough. Seems the origional disc just wasn't co-operating as the others i got (verbatim) worked without a hitch, which is good as you nearly need to sell a kidney to buy em!!

Didn't use the dgpulldown prog, i really couldn't see where that fitted into the deal?

Anyway..what i got worked fine. YEY..thanks TTWC. (New tricks learnt every day!)
