  1. I am converting SVCD to AVI using this guide

    https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm

I am puzzled by the resize filter. My SVCD is 480x480 so I resized it to 480x360. However, the resulting video has shorter width (on my screen it is almost 2 cm (1 inch) smaller, where both input and output files at 100% size). I do not want to reduce already small screen size even further. The height is supposed to be smaller so no complaints here. I also use null transform but no confusion there either. I would like to add that input video is stretched, heightwise; output video is perfectly proportional.

The other problem is that I use DivX codec and by default, on single pass, it sets ~2500kbps which is pretty high. My SVCD has average bitrate of 1300kbps. Thus, on default settings the resulting SVCD of 800MB transforms into 2000MB avi file, which is horrible. What bitrate would you suggest.

Thank you for your time and expertise.

  3. First off, i would NOT recommend using that high of a bitrate....generally when converting to divx, you can get away with like HALF the bitrate...maybe 2/3 of the bitrate of the input...but your not gonna get very far if you only do one pass....my recommendation PERSONALLY would be to go around 900k/s and do say 3 passes, it should retain the quality VERY nicely.....as for why exactly you can use lower bitrates, divx was MADE to compress video in a much better manner than mpeg (vcd, svcd, dvd, ect.) and its optimized to do just that...also i know this may be overkill....but i personally use THE highest settings available to me...if your using divx 6, for example, i use the h.263 optimized setting with the highest quality setting available....yes it does take a LONG time to convert (looking at your system specs that you have listed, i'd be willing to say somewhere around 6 hours per hour of video using 3 passes....but take my word on it, when its finished and the size is considerably smaller, it will all be worth it...as for why your aspect ratio is all weird, i dunno honestly, i dont really deal too much with SVCD inputs...mostly i deal with either vcd or dvd....or occasionally wmv, QT, ect. I heard that svcd does something funny like forces a resize through the player that your using??? anyone care to confirm or shoot this down?

Something funny? VCD and DVD also use PAR's (Pixel Aspect Ratio) other than 1:1. DivX can also do non 1:1 pars, though I think you would need to set it after encoding with MPEG4Modifier. Also if it is for a hardware player, not all support non 1:1 PAR's.

  5. Thanks. I watch my videos on PC only. So, I should go ahead with 1300kbps/sec and disregard smaller resolution of the divx output video, right?

  6. I often convert SCVD to DivX ... I normally go at around 800 kbs for a file size of around 700-800 meg for a two hour film.

Quality on a PC is excellent.... unless you have a 32 " monitor
