I've been resizing many of my AVI's so that the older classic movies almost have a Letterbox look to them and the modern day Letterbox movies are a little taller. I've used AVIDemux and VirtualDub with pretty good success, but occasionally get a video file that will not stretch as wide as I want it. Like for this one file, the raw width was 512 and I could resize it to 640 but no more. I have been able to get some files to go wider than 640 but not all. Why is that, and is there any other program that you were recommend to do this? I've always tried AVIRecomp but could not get that to do the trick.

There is no reason why a file cannot be stretched as far as you want to stretch it, although unless you try to maintain the aspect ratio, all you get is more and more distortion (which bizarrely, seems to be your aim here).

Without a lot more detail about what exactly you are doing, I can offer you no logical explanation beyond user error. More detail would include mediainfo tree output of the AVI source file, and the resizing process and settings you are attempting yo use.

  3. In VirtualDub's Resize filter change Aspect Ration -> Same As Source to Disabled. You can now use whatever width and heights you want.
