I have a set of Imax3d glasses, and with all this talk about making the new/classic Star Wars Films into 3D (I assume they arent talking about red/blue "3d") I was wondering if there is any software to do this? I figure there must be some way to do it, sa they werent shot with any special 3d cameras.
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, i figured i was "Restoring" my 2d footage back into 3d real life.
Thanks in advance everyone!

their are 2 methods that you can somewhat simulate this:
go to http://www.razor3donline.com
1. purchase the 3d lens kit for your video/digital camera. This works very well and will film in 3d for you
2.if you already have the footage recorded in regular 2d, use this free software, it does a pretty good job
http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/stvmkr/index.html
try to stay away from those "on the fly" 2d to 3d converter boxes, they really do not work at all. The only benefit from those, is that if you had footage that you filmed in 3d and wish to convert it back to 2d, those boxes will do that for you. Otherwise try the software listed in step 2. It does a better job of 2d to 3d and has a ton of options as well as various 3d outputs (including shutter) -
Thanks for the info. I like that they have an entire rig with the glasses. My print of Batman Begins on IMAX got screwd up halfway through and out of spite, I procured 2 sets of Imax 3D glasses and those are what piqued my interest, when I look at my laptop with them, the screen looks like its off in one lens, but normal in the other, its kinda neat. And if i put my hand infront of the LCD with the darker lens, with the lights turned off, its backlit, a glowing effects, its cool.

There are a number of apps that can be used to do 2d->3d conversion, but all of the non-proprietary ones expect you to do quite alot of manual adjustment. Also, IMHO, the process is similar to mono->stereo or B/W->color. If you spend rediculous amounts of time and money and expertise on it, you can come up with something quite good and convincing, but it's way more streamlined and less costly for non-hollywood types to just shoot with 2 cameras (or beamsplitter, etc)
If you want to try your hand at it, one of the great 3d apps (maya, 3dstudiomax, etc) and aftereffects is a good place to start. You'll need to do dual-image adjustments--horizontal shifting of the areas of focus, foreground/background resizing for correct occlusion, bump/texture mapping for roundedness, etc.
Do a google search on Puppetkite Kid (good technique tips), Peter Wimmer's Stereo Player, Ray3d and Canyon 3d. Or try http://www.stereo3d.com
BTW, what you're seeing from your LCD screen is a polarized image, which most likely is polarized 1 way for Red and Blue, and perpendicularly for Green. If you have IMAX polarized glasses, I would expect you to get strange color ghosting/fringing effects, especially if you tilt your head. But you won't get correct 3d with your current setup.
Also, most realtime hardware 2d->3d boxes are really only giving you the equivalent of a Pulfrich effect. This is psuedoscopic, not true stereo3d. You'd be able to tell that when nothing is moving in the scene, all 3d sensation will disappear.

On the other hand, he said my print, which could mean a couple of things:
1. He runs/owns/works at an IMAX theater, and the theater's ("his") print messed up halfway through and so on.
2. Same as 1, except he was a moviegoer, the film messed up, so he nicked a couple of those cheapie glasses, which got him interested in making his own 3D.
He never said, "I downloaded it", or "my copy was..."
I have yet to hear someone refer to an illegal downloaded copy as a "print".
Too many witch-hunts going on here, people. -
You guessed correct.
Why/How would I download an IMAX print of a movie? 80mm movies on a computer from a video camera would look no better, if not worse, due to the dimensions of the theater they are shown in. -
there are three types of Imax glasses, but non use red/blue type as mentioned in a prev. post ..
I work with a lot of 3D films and 3D - you shouldn't steal the glasses please. Well if its those cheap ones - not a big loss, but if its the active system, big bucks.... and useless outside the theater anyway .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
AND its 70mm film btw, not 80 (really its 65mm)

They are the ones that feel like lab goggles on, and are clear not red/blue with the non folding ear mounts (I assume so you can't tuck them away under a shirt our a big leather jacket with a bunch of upset customers at a shoddy Imax theater in a crap hole part of town.

Yea Imax . Iwerks , Universal Parks , SimEx dont use Red Blue glasses , they all use polarized or LCD (not to much lcd)
