    hi

ok, so I'm ready to pull my hair out. Ive been holding in there for some time now with these errors that come up from time to time. from what I recall its an error created by dr wtson, and if I remember correctly its cause is because of codecs.
the error says something to the extent of an error has occured, an error log is being created.

ok. so the explorer.exe restarts itself right? and then everything just... well reboots I guess for lack of better words. exporer reboots, not the entire system.

so what does this have to do with dvd shrink. ok.
well, I was in the process of shrinking my backup of coach carter (before any of the extended family - kids- go and play frisby with it), and then the error occured while I was sorting some of my other files.
well, NOW dvdshrink isnt showing up in my toolbar at bottom, I have no idea where it is in the process, or if it is in fact still doing its job.
I hit ctrl+alt+del - and according to what the taskmanager says... I am still using 94% of my cpu on whatever its doing.

    so. can anyone tell me:
is it still shrinking, or is a total loss, have to start all over again?
how can I get rid of dr wtson, or at least rectify those maddening errors (I cant even open the folder where said files are to do anything with them short of a search through windows and delete them.. and that means searching file by file until I find the oen that gives me the error, waiting for it to give me the error, it restart, search again, then gamble - hope I'm fast enough to delete it before I get the error)?

as always, all of your help, comments, advice is greatly appreciated.

after posting, I've found it did complete, and it notified me of such. so thats one less problem... so I am still left with my 'issue' with dr wtson.

Try looking at the Event Viewer. Go to Control Panel -->Administrative Tools --> Event Viewer. Look in both the System and Application logs. The errors are noted in red. Sometimes, depending on the program, you get an idea of what is causing the issue. I'm not sure if XP Home has the Admin Tools, I've never used it, but I guess it does. Even if it doesn't explicitly spell the error out, it usually gives you enough to run through Google and resolve the issue.
Another thing to do is try turning off services and programs that aren't needed so you're not taxing your CPU. It's most likely an issue with Windows, you can try re-installing SP1/SP2, you may have to re-install Windows completely. If it was a hardware issue, most likely your computer would either shut down, blue screen, or reboot.
You can try looking at the .dmp files that are generated by Dr. Watson. They're usually meant for the engineers, but sometime you can make sense of them.

    Hope this helps.

You cant get "rid" of ol Doc Watson. It's a integral part of windows from way back. Basicly its a error log reader that displays what windows has been doing and what went wrong.

I wouldn't recommend taking it out unless you like to gamble......

It's probably better to fix the problem that activates Dr. Watson, but if you really want to disable it......http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188296

well ok, yeah, I mispoke, typed.
I mean as a very last resort I would disable the program.
really I just want the damned thing fixed.

sidenote - canadian beer is the shizzle my nizzles......... goddamn...
hard day at work, long story. ok back to the point.

yeah I just want the problem fixed. hows about this - has anyone ELSE experienced the same problem? I mean... I dont know, I feel pretty stupid right now frankly... I mean I'm sure its something so simple both to rectify and to avoid in the first place. so, if I DO get THIS problem fixed, I'd like to avoid a re-occurance of the same.

    anyone? same boat? same creek?

Sounds like to me you just overloaded your system and Explorer quit, then restarted. Shouldn't happen, though. I would try substituting your RAM memory modules, maybe one is marginal and flakes out under load. Wouldn't hurt to have more memory anyhow. 256MB is a little small for XP with a couple of programs running. Shrink generally uses 100% of your CPU, and it or most any encoding or transcoding program can stress memory modules. Random crashes or errors are one result of memory problems.
