  1. Hello,
I am new to DVD burning and this site.

I recently purchased a Sony external DL, DVD writer. I tried buring some video (VOB files) to my great quality (GQ) media 4x DVD+R media. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. What I mean is that my dvd player can't read the DVD that I made?
I've checked if the player can read the format and it can read DVD -r, +r, -RW, +RW.

So I thought it might be the media quality. I used an 8x JVC DVD-r. That worked fine.

I am determine to have my dvd player play both.
I both better DVD+R, memorex and fuji (both 8x). That didn't work? When it does work, the picture sometimes is "pixelated". This happens on 8x, 4x GQ, FUJI, and Memorex.

Today, I'll try more 8x DVD-r to see if it is consistent.

I need help! Is it the media or my burner or my player?

Some burners like +R more than -R(or vise versa) like my BenQ burner. Try burning a +R at 4x instead of 8x..might help.
Post what authoring program and burning software you are using...be specific and you'll most likely get more help.

    Maybe 2 issues:

1.Try burning at a slow speed, say 2x. I had this before and it was down to me burning too fast and my dvd player could not recognise the data on the disc because it was burnt too quick.

    2. You may have had a bad batch of media-i.e. some where fine and some not. Maybe the player just does not like those discs-i'll assume that you've burnt some ok and they played, so i'd go with bad batch. Maybe try a change in media-i've always used ritek, but each to one's own.

Yes I have tried burning a 4x at 1x. The dvd player at least is able to read the dvd. However, it is pixelated (little white squares) in some scenes.

I used dvd decrypter and a no name brand dvd burner (bought it and returned it) to rip the video to HD.

I use dvd shrink and or nero 6.

Well, I just burned a video on a 8x -R, but it is pixelated? I guess the -r are not consistant as well.

Sony drives are REBADGED LITEON drives which tend to like DVD+R media better than DVD-R. I would suggest you use DVD+R media then booktype it to DVD-ROM. MEMOREX dvd media sucks if the MEDIA CODE is CMC which burns coasters for me. For some CMC will burn fine and others they only produce coasters. The FUJI discs that you have are they MADE IN JAPAN? Download DVDINFO PRO or DVD IDENTIFIER to find out the manufacturer of those discs you have.

If you want a better dvd burner get a BENQ 1620 internal drive and use a external firewire drive case with it. Or you could get a external BENQ 162i from newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Showimage.asp?Mode=&Type=&Image=27-101-640-01.jpg%2C27-1...W162i+-+Retail

Pixelation could be caused by using crappy media or/and the process of which you used to compress the video files.

  9. joseph_video,

I bought some GC disks from Fry's for .05 each with rebate awhile ago. They had a fake TY media code. They were not very great quality.

Now I stick to genuine TY and Verbatim (MCC) media.

Do your burns playback ok on the Sony?
