  1. The last 4 discs I've burnt (and one a few days ago) have been doing this, after hundreds of successful burns.

Burning with Nero, it reaches the 100% point of the burn, but then hangs without finishing.

The disc stops spinning, but the Nero stays on. As for the disc, it has no directory, and is unuseable, even though the data is actually there (Nero's Disc Info sees the data being there, even if it doesn't know what it is).

It is a Pioneer 106. Is this a sign that the drive is kaput? CDR's still burn fine.

Is there any way to keep it alive (get it working again) until I can get a new one, if this one is dead?

Try using another burning software other than Nero.

  3. The only other thing I have is DVD Decrypter (my other programs are too old, and won't recognise the drive). I was going to try that.

EDIT: Update, DVD Decripter successfully burned a disc, so perhaps the problem is with Nero.

  4. Perhaps you can uninstall/reinstall Nero. You may have a corrupted or missing file. I've had this happen with other programs (very rare) due to sectors that were damaged and reinstalling placed the program on another part of the HD.

Also, I've had intances of programs acting up after a defrag session (also very rare), my assumtion is that something got dropped or corrupted while the computer was 're-grouping' the fragmented files.
If it works, don't fix it.

  5. You could also try updating your writer's firmware.Nero usually advises people to do so when encountering problems like the one you are describing.
