I usually leave mine on for weeks at a time. And when I do turn it off, it is only to restart it.

My main system has been running non-stop for a month.

It is ok to leave them running.

  5. I leave all three of my machines on 24/7 (2 at home, 1 at work). The only issue I've encountered was a fried power supply, but it was a P.O.S.

Mines been on for a year.......Except for a few holiday's that I was away. The only time I turn it off is if I'm going to be away for extended period of time.

  9. We've got an old computer at work (pre-pentium DOS) that monitors storage tank levels, that's been running 24/7 for about 10 years now. I belive it has a 286 processor and is running the program off a floppy disk (5 1/2") because the hard drive went out.

We are afraid to replace it because it would probably shut us down for a day or two. Everyone that knew what / how it does what it does has retired or left.
If it works, don't fix it.

We have a P4 Celeron 2.53 LAN server at home that runs all the time. Before it we had a P2-350 that lived a long, long time. Leaving it on all the time when it's not a server, or you're not around, just wastes electricity. But it won't hurt it

I don't use a scrren saver, so I just turn off the monitor

If leaveing on with a program running, you may want to adjust power settings

You really should look into installing a sprinkler system .... or start self medicating to get over your neurosis. :P

No really ... my dell have been on for months. I only restart it when the OS gets buggy or an instill requires a reboot. I have two small kids at home and I don't lose a wink of sleep over my PC running 24/7.

That's the only reason I turn mine off. Fire.... I would wire your computer so only your Computer has power to it. All other items should be another switch.

My desktop here at work... A Compaq Pressario, has been running non-stop for 4 and 1/2 years.

My servers stay up 24/7 barring maintenance and updates. Most updates on W2KAS don't require a reboot either. I'll turn my main desktop off every now and then if I'm not going to be using it for a while (which is almost non-existent).
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

Quite possibly. I noticed waves of heat emanating from the case when mine failed. It was extremely hot. However, the construction was cheap, and it was obviously one of those shoddy Chinese jobs with a fake 400w sticker slapped on it. Get yourself a high-quality PSU & plenty of ventilation and it shouldn't be a problem.

I hope this isn't monitoring a storage tank level for say... a nuclear reactor cooling system!!!

I leave both of mine on 24/7 too.
I download 24/7 since I found out about this bit torrent stuff, about 8 months now. I reboot once in a while so XP has a refrance point for the system restore.
    Thanks Mike

  24. You might want to open it up somewhere down the line and blow the dust and lint off the CPU fan and heat sink. Mine gets pretty full of lint after awhile. If the CPU overheats from not cooling properly it will fail prematurely.

Work is a tad cleaner so I havn't had to clean it out yet .... no dogs running past the machine, etc .... with it on 24/7 it will turn into a vacuum cleaner at home so I would recommend a dusting down in your workshop with your compressor or quick vac once a year. Also, don't have it closed up in an cabinet or such

I would go as far as to blow off your power supply fan and the case fan as well.

In the old days it was taboo to turn your set off. Now I don't think it matters. You have a few energy saving options and such nowadays if you want to play with them. I can't remember the last time that I just turned mine off (other than the daily crash or two) there are to many start up screens to clear and OSes to pick from and such when I have to restart. I like to just be able to tip the kids out of the chair and close the game right before they reach a new high score and come to this site to escape the reality of the outside world.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

That ought to make you real popular

I know the feeling. We solved it by giving everyone their own PC. Before we did that, when the kids were younger, it was always "you had it for three hours already. It's my turn now." Then when I needed to get on to pay the bills I'd have to bribe them away from the machine

Bride the kids, don't let my daughter hear that. Thats all I need another payment. Taxed on my earnings, taxed on my spendings, intrest, late charges, utilitys, wife, kid. Its lucky if I have enough to live.
    LOL
